Not reliably across market conditions, based on the studies available here. AI and statistical models can identify patterns in historical Bitcoin data and produce useful forecasts for particular periods or horizons. But strong results on a historical test set do not show that a model will keep working in a changing market—or make money in live trading.
What “reliably” means for a Bitcoin forecast
A forecast can look accurate under one test and fail when prices behave differently. Reliability therefore means more than fitting past data: a model should continue to perform on later, unseen periods and across different market conditions. A profitable trading strategy faces a further test: it must remain useful after trading costs. The studies discussed below evaluate historical data; they do not establish a current live-market success rate.

Results also depend on what the model predicts. An exact price, a price return and whether Bitcoin will rise or fall are different targets. Their error measures—such as MSE, RMSE, MAE, MAPE and R-squared—answer different questions and cannot be treated as interchangeable.

Short-term forecasts can fit stable periods
Amin Azari’s 2019 study, “Bitcoin Price Prediction: An ARIMA Approach”, examines Bitcoin closing prices over a three-year period and focuses on one-day-ahead forecasts. It reports that ARIMA can be useful over short horizons when the time series behaves nearly consistently.

Changing behavior can undermine a model
The same study reports larger errors when the model is trained across periods with different behavior or used for longer-range predictions. It also failed to capture sharp fluctuations, including volatility at the end of 2017. That is a key limitation: a model that learns a relatively steady stretch may not respond well when the market shifts abruptly. Azari suggests adding features beyond price alone, but additional inputs do not by themselves guarantee better forecasts.
What machine-learning studies report
Technical indicators and a stacking model
Samuel Asante Gyamerah’s 2019 study, “Are Bitcoins price predictable? Evidence from machine learning techniques using technical indicators,” uses Bitcoin data from 2012-01-01 through 2019-08-16. It compares generalized linear models, random forest, support vector regression and a stacking ensemble using technical indicators. On that study’s testing data, the stacking model was the best of those compared. Its reported results were MAPE of 0.0191%, RMSE of USD 15.5331, MAE of USD 124.5508 and R-squared of 0.9967.

Those figures describe one model, dataset and test—not the accuracy a reader should expect from an AI forecast today. Gyamerah’s paper also says results should be studied across separate states, underscoring that performance in one stretch does not establish performance in another.
LSTM versus GRU
Ali Mohammadjafari’s 2024 preprint, “Comparative Study of Bitcoin Price Prediction,” compares LSTM and GRU neural networks using daily Bitcoin price and volume observations collected through 2023-04-06. The paper reports five-fold cross-validation and L2 regularization; its test-set MSE was 6.25 for LSTM and 4.67 for GRU. This indicates that GRU performed better than LSTM in that experiment, not that it will remain superior on later data, other exchanges or live trading.

Why the reported scores cannot be ranked together
The studies use different data samples, model setups, targets and metrics. Gyamerah reports MAPE, RMSE, MAE and R-squared; Mohammadjafari reports MSE. Their numbers are not results from a shared benchmark, so comparing them as if one model had beaten another across the same test would be misleading.

- Horizon: Does it predict the next day, an intraday move or a longer-term price?
- Test design: Was the test period kept separate in chronological order, or could information from the future have entered training?
- Market conditions: Does the evaluation include only stable stretches, or also volatile and changing periods?
- Inputs and target: Does the model use past prices alone, technical indicators, volume or other features, and is it forecasting price, return or direction?
- Metric: Is the reported measure suitable for the stated target, and is it being compared with results using the same measure and test setup?
- Live utility: Was performance measured prospectively and after trading costs, rather than only on historical prices?
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
The studies show that models can find patterns in historical Bitcoin data and produce forecasts with measurable skill in particular experiments. They do not establish that AI can predict Bitcoin reliably across future market conditions or deliver profitable live predictions. The cited studies are retrospective, with historical samples ending no later than April 2023; they do not provide a recent prospective benchmark for current AI systems in live conditions.
