But a local model alone does not prove that notes never leave the device: the app’s full data path and network behavior matter. The sources available for this topic do not verify the specific build described in the original headline, so its model, privacy behavior, and question quality cannot be confirmed.
What “local AI” means for private notes
In local inference, a model processes a prompt on hardware controlled by the user instead of sending that prompt to a remote inference service. Microsoft says its Foundry Local runtime performs inference on-device and that inference input and output do not leave the machine. That statement applies to Foundry Local, not automatically to every app that uses a local model. Microsoft’s Foundry Local FAQ also describes network activity for the initial model download and optional catalog refresh.

LocalAI describes a runtime for running models on hardware under the user’s control, ranging from CPU laptops to GPU clusters. That describes an architecture; it does not establish how fast a particular laptop will run an examiner or whether a specific app keeps every step local. LocalAI documentation
Keep two questions separate: where the notes are processed, and whether the app needs the internet for other tasks. A model may be downloaded before use, while subsequent inference happens locally. LocaLLM, for example, says its model is downloaded and cached for offline use; that is a description of that product, not a guarantee about other applications. LocaLLM

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to verify that notes stay on the laptop
To support a claim that notes never leave a device, inspect the entire route from file selection to saved output—not just the model’s location. A local inference engine cannot by itself establish where document conversion, OCR, retrieval, logs, updates, or optional integrations run. The claim should be limited to the stages the builder has actually checked.
- File handling: Determine whether the original file and any extracted text are processed locally or uploaded for conversion.
- Model and inference: Identify the runtime and model, and confirm whether prompts and generated answers are sent to a remote service.
- Supporting services: Check whether OCR, embeddings, search, telemetry, crash reporting, or integrations transmit content or identifying information.
- Network behavior: Distinguish initial model downloads and catalog or update checks from requests containing note content. A connection to the internet does not by itself prove that notes were uploaded; absence of an obvious connection is not, by itself, proof that no data was sent.
- Storage and deletion: Find where source files, extracted text, and generated questions are stored, and what deleting them removes.
For a browser feature, the scope is also feature-specific. Chrome for Developers says the network is needed for the initial model download for its documented built-in AI feature and notes that model size can vary as the browser updates it. That does not establish the behavior of a separate web app or browser extension. Chrome’s built-in AI guide

What an AI examiner can do—and what remains to be checked
Exam-question generation from study material is a real use case. The Exameow repository describes a project that turns study materials into multiple question formats and lists document and image formats it supports. Those are the project maintainers’ descriptions, not an independent evaluation and not evidence about the examiner in the headline. Exameow’s README

Generated questions should be treated as drafts unless they have been checked against the notes. The sources cited here do not establish the accuracy, coverage, or educational value of questions produced by the specific build. A useful review checks whether each question is supported by the material, whether its answer is correct, and whether important topics are missing.

Does a local examiner need an external drive?
No. A model download and local files use storage, so an external drive may be useful if the laptop lacks space or the collection is large. The cited sources do not establish that a portable SSD is required or identify a particular drive. Storage needs depend on the model, notes, and application data involved.
