Can AI Image Watermarks Be Removed—and Does That Affect Authenticity?

AI image watermarks can be removed, lost, or made undetectable. Metadata credentials and embedded marks fail differently, and neither a positive nor negative check proves an image is authentic.

Yes, AI image watermarks can be removed, lost, or made undetectable—but the method matters. A metadata-based Content Credential can disappear during routine handling such as conversion or taking a screenshot. Pixel-level watermarks such as Google’s SynthID are built to survive some changes, but they are not guaranteed to remain detectable after extensive manipulation. In either case, a watermark check cannot by itself prove that an image is genuine, truthful, or human-made.

What kind of watermark are you checking?

“AI image watermark” can refer to different signals that live in different places. That distinction explains why one mark may vanish during ordinary file handling while another survives common edits.

Signal Where it lives What may happen to it What a check can establish
Visible watermark As visible text, a logo, or a label overlaid on the image It can often be cropped or edited out. Removing the overlay does not establish where the image came from. Only that the visible mark is present or absent; the mark alone does not verify the image’s origin.
C2PA Content Credential Signed metadata describing an image’s origin and history It can be lost through routine handling, including some conversions or screenshots. [OpenAI’s C2PA guidance] A valid credential can provide provenance context, but not prove the depicted events are true. [C2PA’s explainer]
Embedded watermark, such as SynthID Encoded in image pixels rather than stored only as metadata Google says SynthID can remain detectable after filters, color or brightness changes, and common lossy compression, but is not foolproof against extreme manipulation. [Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview] A positive check indicates a signal supported by that detector; it does not establish truth, ownership, or an unedited image.

Content Credentials and pixel-level watermarks are not interchangeable. A file can lose its metadata while its pixels still carry an embedded signal, or a detector may fail to find a signal that is present but has been altered.

Can an AI image watermark actually be removed?

Metadata can be lost without a deliberate removal attack

A screenshot or format conversion may leave out the original file’s signed provenance metadata. That can happen as a side effect of ordinary handling, rather than through an attempt to conceal the image’s origin. The image may still look unchanged, but the provenance record that could have helped trace its source or history may be gone.

Embedded watermarks may survive routine changes, not every attack

Pixel-level signals are designed to withstand some transformations, not to be permanent under all conditions. Google DeepMind says SynthID is not foolproof against extreme image manipulations. A 2026 arXiv preprint, MarkNull, reports an experimental attack on SynthID-Image that reduced watermark bit accuracy toward random-guessing levels while preserving high visual quality. That is a preliminary research result, not proof that every image can be reliably stripped or a dependable consumer removal method.

The practical distinction is between ordinary handling that can discard metadata, common changes that an embedded watermark may withstand, and more extensive manipulations that may defeat detection. None of these outcomes tells you whether the scene depicted actually happened.

What does a watermark check tell you?

A positive result is evidence of a supported signal

A detector that finds a supported watermark or credential has identified a provenance signal it recognizes. That can be useful evidence about source or history, but it does not prove the image’s contents are accurate, unedited, legally owned by the person sharing it, or shown in the right context. C2PA says “provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.” [C2PA explainer]

A negative result is inconclusive

If a checker does not find a signal, it means only that it did not find one it supports. The file may have lost its metadata, the watermark may have become undetectable, or the image may come from a provider or signal type outside that checker’s coverage. OpenAI’s verifier is not a general-purpose detector for every AI system; OpenAI notes that a missing result does not rule out generation by OpenAI or another provider. [OpenAI’s verification guidance]

So, neither “watermark found” nor “watermark not found” is an authenticity verdict. A signal can help trace provenance; verifying the depicted event requires other evidence, such as the original source, corroborating images, or independent reporting.

How to check an image for supported provenance signals

For images associated with OpenAI

  1. Use the original exported image file where possible. Avoid taking a screenshot, cropping, or converting it before checking, because those steps may remove metadata or affect a signal.
  2. Use OpenAI’s image verification guidance to check for supported OpenAI provenance signals, such as a SynthID watermark or trusted C2PA manifest.
  3. Interpret a positive result as evidence of a supported signal—not proof that the image is truthful, unedited, or legally owned. Treat no result as inconclusive, not proof of human authorship.

For Google AI content

Google announced its SynthID Detector on May 20, 2025, initially rolling it out to early testers. The announcement describes a portal that scans supported Google AI content for SynthID and can highlight portions likely to be watermarked. [Google’s announcement] Access conditions may have changed since that announcement; check the official service for current availability. The detector’s scope is supported Google AI content, not every AI image on the internet.

Does removing or losing the watermark change image authenticity?

No. Removing a label or losing a provenance record does not change whether the depicted scene is real. It can, however, remove evidence that would have helped establish where the file came from or how it was handled, making verification harder. Conversely, a detected signal does not certify that the image is factual or correctly contextualized.

Google reported in 2025 that more than 10 billion pieces of content had been watermarked with SynthID. [Google’s announcement] That is a reported deployment figure, not an independent measure of detection accuracy. It should not be read as a guarantee that any checker will identify every watermarked image.
