Yes—AI can help design a printed circuit board (PCB), from turning requirements into a schematic draft to assisting with placement, routing, and review. But that is not the same as producing a verified, fabrication-ready board on its own. Treat AI output as an editable starting point, then check it with the right engineering tools and a qualified human reviewer.
What does PCB design actually involve?
A PCB is not just copper traces on a board. The work typically moves through several connected stages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Define requirements: specify what the circuit must do, its interfaces, power needs, size, and operating conditions.
- Select components: choose parts that meet those requirements and check their datasheets, availability, and electrical limits.
- Capture a schematic: represent the circuit and its connections before translating it into a physical board.
- Place and route: arrange components and connect them with copper traces while respecting electrical and physical constraints.
- Verify and prepare outputs: run applicable design checks, review manufacturability, and generate files for fabrication.
KiCad’s official site describes a conventional EDA suite that supports schematic capture, simulation, PCB layout, 3D rendering, and export: KiCad. Its version 9 introduction documents those capabilities for that version; it is not the current release documentation: KiCad 9.0 documentation.

AI tools do not all tackle the same part of PCB design. The examples below reflect what their providers describe, not independent comparative testing.

| Approach | What the provider describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated browser-based EDA assistance | Flux describes AI assistance for research, schematic work, placement, routing, and review inside a browser-based EDA workflow. It also describes editable designs and imports or exports. Flux product page | Confirm that the tool supports your existing files, libraries, constraints, and handoff needs. Flux says engineers retain control over architecture, component choice, constraints, critical routing, verification, and release. Flux EDA page |
| Requirements-to-design handoff | CELUS describes translating requirements into matched components, schematics, and a bill of materials (BOM), then handing work off to another EDA tool. CELUS platform | Check the component matches against datasheets and confirm that the schematic and BOM transfer cleanly into the EDA environment where the board will be completed. |
| Code-driven automation | JITX describes a software-defined, code-driven approach to electronics and layout automation, including an on-premises workflow. JITX | Assess whether a code-based process suits your team’s skills, review practices, infrastructure, and toolchain. |
These are different scopes, not interchangeable promises. A tool that drafts a schematic or BOM may not route a board; an automated layout workflow does not by itself establish that a design is electrically correct or ready to manufacture.
How strong is the evidence so far?
A 2026 preprint by Tobias King, Steven Kehrberg, Michael Beigl, and Tobias Röddiger reports results for pcbGPT on 20 embedded schematic-generation tasks. The authors report pass@1 of 0.90 overall, with 1.00 on basic and easy tasks, 0.91 on medium tasks, and 0.72 on hard tasks. These figures describe performance on that small, defined schematic benchmark—not the success rate of finished or manufactured PCBs, and not a test of the vendor products listed above. - 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
- Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
- Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
- From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
- Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power
The paper’s authors characterize pcbGPT as capable of producing useful, reviewable first-draft schematics for early prototyping, while saying it is not reliable enough to replace expert review. That distinction matters: a plausible-looking circuit draft is not evidence that it meets every electrical, thermal, mechanical, or manufacturing requirement.

A 2026 survey of generative AI across PCB design and test also identifies domain-specific data scarcity and limited integration with existing PCB tools as technical challenges. Those limits can affect how well a tool handles specialized designs and how much work is needed to move its output into a production workflow. Read the survey.

How should you evaluate an AI PCB tool?
Before relying on one for a project, use this checklist:
- Toolchain fit: Can you import and export the formats, footprints, libraries, and project data your team already uses?
- Editable output: Can an engineer inspect and modify the schematic, layout, component choices, and constraints rather than receiving an opaque result?
- Component grounding: Are proposed parts supported by current datasheets and appropriate electrical ratings? Check availability and substitutes separately.
- Verification: Can you run electrical-rule and design-rule checks in your EDA environment, simulate where applicable, and inspect manufacturing constraints?
- Human signoff: Who reviews critical connections, power and signal constraints, component selections, and fabrication outputs before release?
- Data and deployment: Determine what project information the service processes and whether its browser-based or on-premises model fits your team’s requirements.
A practical first use is a low-risk prototype or a draft that an experienced designer can check. Keep the design in an editable toolchain, verify it with the checks appropriate to the circuit, and do not send it to fabrication solely because an AI system produced a coherent-looking result.

Can AI replace a PCB engineer?
The evidence here does not establish that a general AI can independently produce a correct, production-ready PCB without engineering validation. AI can reduce effort at selected stages, but someone still needs to decide whether the requirements are complete, whether the parts and connections are appropriate, whether the layout meets constraints, and whether the final files are safe to release.
