Yes—but the method depends on what you mean by a “break.” To switch between a live camera, prerecorded video, and a custom break screen, use streaming software such as OBS to change the program being sent to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room also has a temporary Take a Break overlay. Scheduled mid-rolls are different: they schedule possible ads, not a particular video or scene.
Choose the right kind of break
| What you want to do | Use | What viewers see |
|---|---|---|
| Switch from a camera to a prerecorded video or custom break scene | An encoder such as OBS Studio | The scene or media in the encoder’s outgoing program feed |
| Temporarily show an away screen without changing encoder scenes | YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break | YouTube’s default slate or an eligible video from your channel library |
| Offer advertising during a monetized stream | YouTube mid-roll ad controls | An ad to viewers who receive one; other viewers continue seeing the stream |
A scheduled YouTube event creates the event page and can let viewers set reminders; it does not schedule arbitrary future changes among encoder scenes. [YouTube: schedule a live stream]

Switch between live and prerecorded content with OBS
OBS sends a composed feed to YouTube. Its scenes can combine sources such as a camera, media file, graphics, and audio; switching scenes changes what the encoder sends. YouTube’s encoder workflow connects that feed to the scheduled stream using the server URL and stream key. [OBS: scenes and sources] [YouTube: stream using an encoder]
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule the stream if you want an upcoming event page or reminder option. Scheduling the event does not schedule scene changes.
- Connect OBS to the event. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. Confirm that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled stream.
- Build clearly named scenes. Add a live-camera scene, a prerecorded-video scene, and any break-card or break-video scene you plan to use. In OBS, add the relevant sources to each scene, then label scenes so the operator can identify them quickly.
- Prepare the media sources. Load each prerecorded file into its scene and check that video and audio play as intended. Test the camera, microphone, media-file audio, and transitions before the event. Keep the break scene ready if you want a controlled intermission rather than a blank or unintended frame.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are recommendations, not hard requirements. In Live Control Room, verify the incoming preview before going live. [YouTube: live encoder settings]
- Switch at the moment you choose. In OBS, select the live, prerecorded, or break scene when appropriate. You can also configure scene-switching hotkeys and transitions. The change is part of the outgoing program; it is not a YouTube schedule that will switch scenes while the encoder is unattended.
Do a complete rehearsal with the same files and scenes you intend to use. Make sure the intended audio is audible on each scene, the transition does not expose an unintended source, and the stream preview shows the correct program before the event begins.

Use YouTube’s Take a Break overlay
Take a Break is a native away overlay in Live Control Room, separate from the scene being sent by OBS. Set the overlay in the break settings and choose YouTube’s default slate or a video from your channel library. A selected channel video must be public or unlisted and allow embedding. Available break durations are 1, 3, or 5 minutes. [YouTube Help: take a break]
Plan for an operator to return to Live Control Room and end the break. YouTube states: “The break does not automatically end when the countdown reaches 0.” The countdown is not an automatic return to your live program, so do not start a break that nobody can end.

What scheduled mid-roll ads do—and do not do
For a monetized live stream, YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, and manual mid-roll ad controls. Scheduled intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes; manual ad insertion is available in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends automatic placement. An ad opportunity is not a guarantee that every viewer will receive an ad: viewers who do not receive one continue watching the stream. [YouTube Help: monetize your live stream]

So, a mid-roll is not a reliable way to show a particular prerecorded clip or intermission screen to everyone. Use an encoder scene when you control the program content; use Take a Break for YouTube’s temporary away overlay.

YouTube reported that channels with automatic live mid-roll ads had an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported comparison, not a promised result for an individual channel, and it measures ad revenue—not scene switching. [YouTube Help: monetize your live stream]
Check rights before using prerecorded media
Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every prerecorded video, music track, and break asset. YouTube’s streaming setup includes rights-management controls, and its encoder guidance advises creators to ensure they have content rights. Selecting or uploading a video does not itself establish that you are cleared to broadcast it. [YouTube: live encoder settings] [YouTube: stream using an encoder]

Common problems and fixes
- The wrong event receives the encoder feed: Check that OBS has the server URL and stream key for the intended scheduled event, then confirm the correct preview in Live Control Room.
- The prerecorded scene appears but has no sound: Check that the media source’s audio is routed into OBS’s stream mix, then listen to the event preview before proceeding.
- The break overlay stays on screen after its countdown: Return to Live Control Room and end the break manually; reaching zero does not end it automatically.
- The selected Take a Break video is unavailable: Check that it is public or unlisted and that embedding is allowed.
- Some viewers do not see an ad: That can happen even when a mid-roll is scheduled or inserted. Ad delivery is not guaranteed to every viewer; use a scene change or Take a Break if the goal is a consistent program interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than switch scenes during a produced event, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
