No—not if OBS is the encoder sending the playlist. Closing OBS stops its video feed to YouTube, so the live stream cannot keep playing from that session. To turn off your computer and keep a YouTube broadcast going, another encoder must continue sending the video, such as a cloud playout service.
Why closing OBS stops the live stream
OBS runs on your computer and sends the video feed to YouTube. The OBS Project explains that its connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service. YouTube likewise instructs creators to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream. When OBS closes, its contribution to the broadcast stops; YouTube does not take over as a playlist player.
A YouTube video playlist that viewers can play on demand is different from a live broadcast. A live broadcast needs an active source continuously sending video.
Settings that do not keep the feed running
Scheduling a stream
Scheduling lets you promote an upcoming event, share its URL, and let viewers request notifications. At stream time, you still need to connect and start an encoder. Scheduling does not supply video after OBS stops.

Auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control stream-event behavior. They do not replace the encoder or provide a server-side player for your playlist.
Switching to HLS
HLS is an ingestion protocol, not a way to remove the encoder requirement. YouTube still requires an encoder to send the media feed.

Ways to keep a playlist stream live
Keep the OBS computer running
- Configure your playlist source in OBS to play or loop as intended.
- Keep the computer powered on, connected to the internet, and OBS open while the broadcast runs.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, connect the encoder, wait for the preview, and check stream health before the event.
- When the broadcast is over, end the event on YouTube and stop the encoder feed.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, starting at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring quality.
Use another encoder that stays online
If you need to shut down your computer, move playout to an encoder running elsewhere or to a cloud service that streams prerecorded video. YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud services for continuous prerecorded-video streams, including Gyre and Upstream. These are examples listed by YouTube, not endorsements. Verify a provider’s current playlist controls, supported formats, file limits, interruption handling, price, and reliability terms directly before choosing it; YouTube’s documentation does not establish comparable prices or service guarantees.

Plan for archives and content rights
Replay and archive limits
YouTube says encoder-based streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance is not a guarantee for longer broadcasts or a promise that a 24/7 stream will be saved as one replay. If you plan to run longer, verify YouTube’s current archive behavior and arrange another way to preserve the recording if needed.

Copyright and platform policies
Continuous streaming does not change the rights requirements: you need suitable rights to all video and audio in the playlist. Follow YouTube’s platform policies and content requirements before broadcasting.

- The broadcast ends as soon as OBS closes: OBS was the active encoder. Keep it running, or move playout to another encoder that stays online.
- A scheduled event has no video: Scheduling creates the event but does not start an encoder. Connect and start the encoder at the event time.
- Auto-start is enabled, but playback does not continue: Auto-start controls encoder behavior; it does not provide a video source. Check that an encoder is still sending the feed.
- The playlist is visible as a YouTube playlist, but not as a live stream: A video playlist and an encoder-based live broadcast are different. Configure the playlist in an active encoder or cloud playout service.
- You expect HLS to keep the stream alive: HLS still requires an encoder sending media to YouTube.
Before choosing a setup
Compare where the encoder runs, whether your computer and upload connection must stay on, playlist-management controls, supported media formats, how interruptions are handled, and current service prices and limits. YouTube’s official documentation establishes the local-versus-cloud distinction, but does not provide comparable vendor prices or service-level guarantees.
