Can a YouTube 24/7 Stream Use Music Licensed for a Different Channel?

A different channel can use the music only if the license covers that channel and continuous livestream use. Content ID allowlisting is a separate step.

Only if the license actually covers the channel and the continuous livestream use. A license obtained for one YouTube channel does not automatically grant another channel permission. Even with permission, YouTube may interrupt a stream unless the rights holder adds the streaming channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check both issues before going live.

Two separate checks: permission and Content ID

YouTube requires streamers to have all necessary rights for their live content, including music licensing rights. Its livestream terms say creators must maintain those licenses for the duration of the stream. The license determines whether the planned use is permitted; Content ID allowlisting helps prevent an otherwise licensed stream from being interrupted by YouTube’s matching systems. One does not replace the other.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If a match is detected, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube advises creators who have permission to use third-party content to ask the rights owner to allowlist the streaming channel. A license alone does not guarantee that YouTube will recognize the permission automatically.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state that creators represent and warrant they have the necessary rights for live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams explains the scanning and allowlisting process.

What to confirm in the license

The actual agreement controls. YouTube’s general guidance cannot determine whether a private license covers a particular channel, track or planned use. Review the terms and get written confirmation from the rights holder if anything is unclear.

  • Channel: Does the agreement name the licensed channel, and does it also cover the channel that will stream?
  • Use: Does it permit livestreaming, rather than only recorded videos or other formats?
  • Frequency and duration: Does it allow continuous, repeated use, including a 24/7 stream, and remain in force for the stream’s full duration?
  • Territory and term: Does permission cover the intended territories and the period you plan to stream?
  • Archive: Does it cover a saved recording or replay of the livestream? YouTube says an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.
  • Track and rights holders: Confirm that permission covers the recording and relevant rights, which can involve artists, labels, publishers and other participants.

YouTube recommends checking permitted uses in music licenses and the terms of third-party music sources. A label such as “free” or “royalty-free” does not, by itself, establish permission for this use. YouTube describes music as copyright-safe when it is in the public domain or used with permission; see its tips to find safe music.

Before starting a 24/7 music stream

  1. Identify the music recording and relevant rights holders.
  2. Read the license for the channel, livestream, repeated or continuous use, territory, term and any archive or recording rights.
  3. Ask the rights holder for written confirmation if the agreement does not clearly cover the planned stream or another channel.
  4. Ask the rights holder to add the streaming channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that the correct channel is covered.
  5. Keep the agreement and written permission accessible in case you need to resolve a claim or interruption.
  6. If you save the stream, check the archived recording for a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends.

Creator Music and Audio Library are not interchangeable

Creator Music is not a workaround for livestream licensing. YouTube says Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts, and that Creator Music licenses cannot be transferred to another YouTube channel. See YouTube’s Creator Music usage details.

YouTube identifies Audio Library licenses as valid for multiple videos, but that does not mean every track has identical terms or automatically resolves the scope of a 24/7 livestream. Check the applicable track terms and obtain confirmation when the planned use or channel is not clearly covered. YouTube’s guidance on finding safe music recommends reviewing third-party terms for what uses are allowed.

Keeping the stream running is separate from clearing the music

A cloud streaming service can keep uploaded videos looping to YouTube, but it cannot grant music rights or guarantee that a rights holder will allowlist a channel. Clear the music and archive rights first. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos; you upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. Its first day is free with no card, and its monthly option is $9.99 per month. Details are at StreamNeo.
