A USB extension cable can reduce Zigbee dropouts when a USB coordinator is too close to a computer, USB 3.x hardware, or other sources of interference. It is a useful first troubleshooting step—not an instant or guaranteed fix. Home Assistant recommends moving the adapter away from potential interference sources using an adequately long, shielded extension, preferably connected to USB 2.0.
Why moving a Zigbee coordinator can help
A USB Zigbee coordinator plugged directly into a computer or Raspberry Pi may sit beside the host, its USB ports, an external SSD, or nearby radios. That placement can expose it to electrical or radio interference and may impair reception. Moving the coordinator away from the host can improve some setups, though it will not resolve every cause of a disconnection.

Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation advises placing the adapter as far as possible from potential interference sources, preferably with an adequately long, shielded USB extension connected to a USB 2.0 port. Read Home Assistant’s guidance.

Choose and position the extension
Zigbee2MQTT says a 50 cm USB extension may be enough to reduce interference; that is practical project guidance, not a guaranteed minimum or a promise that a particular length will fix a network. Shielding may also help. See Zigbee2MQTT’s adapter guidance.

- Use a compatible, reliable USB extension, preferably shielded.
- Place the coordinator away from the computer, USB 3.x devices, Wi-Fi access points, power supplies, and surfaces or enclosures that obstruct radio reception.
- Try a different orientation or location if reception remains unreliable.
- Use USB 2.0 for the coordinator where possible. If the host has only USB 3.x ports, Home Assistant recommends a powered USB 2.0 hub.
Check what is actually disconnecting
A Zigbee device dropping off the network is not the same as the host losing its USB connection to the coordinator. A faulty or unreliable extension can itself cause USB disconnects. If the problem worsens after adding a cable, or does not improve, check the host’s logs for USB disconnect messages and test the coordinator with a known-reliable connection. The Home Assistant ZHA troubleshooting guidance covers connection issues.
If devices still drop off the Zigbee network
USB placement is only one possible cause. Once the coordinator has a stable USB connection and is positioned away from likely interference, check other parts of the setup:

- 2.4 GHz congestion: Nearby Wi-Fi and other 2.4 GHz radios can overlap with Zigbee traffic. Review channel choices and nearby radio placement.
- Mesh coverage: A device may have a weak path to the coordinator. Compatible mains-powered Zigbee routers can relay traffic and improve coverage, but they do not solve USB interference.
- Coordinator and host: Check coordinator firmware, power, and whether the host is short on system resources.
These are distinct problems: an extension helps reposition a USB-connected coordinator; a router helps extend mesh paths. Neither should be treated as a universal remedy.
