Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Usually, an underpowered TV USB port causes unreliable operation rather than documented damage. A streaming stick may show a low-power warning, crash, or restart; an external drive may fail to start or appear on the TV. But it is not accurate to say damage is impossible: a Hisense manual warns that exceeding the total current consumption for the described USB setup “may result in damage.” Check the exact TV port rating and device requirements, and use the device’s specified power source if the port cannot meet them.
What can happen when a TV USB port cannot supply enough power?
A USB port’s available power depends on its voltage and current limit. If a connected device needs more current than the port can provide, it may not operate reliably. Roku lists a flashing red light or an on-screen low-power or insufficient-power message as signs of inadequate power for covered players; a player may also crash or behave strangely. A solid red Roku light is different: Roku says it usually indicates overheating, not low power. Roku’s low-power troubleshooting guide explains these indicators.

For external storage, insufficient power is one possible reason a TV may not recognize a drive. The drive may fail to start, or the TV may not detect it. LG’s guidance also notes that its recommendations depend on the drive and TV setup. LG’s USB storage troubleshooting page covers insufficient power among the possible causes.

Can the port damage the device?
The cited support guidance primarily describes insufficient power as a cause of warnings, instability, or failure to operate; it does not establish that an ordinary low-power connection will damage a stick or drive. However, do not treat every power mismatch as harmless. In its USB-device connection instructions, a Hisense manual warns: “Exceeding a total current consumption may result in damage.” That is a warning for the manual’s described product and setup, not proof that every TV port behaves the same way. See the Hisense manual.
The practical distinction is that an underpowered device may fail to work properly, while a manufacturer’s warning about exceeding a specified current limit should be taken seriously. Do not assume the TV’s USB port can safely or reliably power a device just because its plug fits.

TV USB power ratings are not universal
Check the label beside the TV’s USB port and the manual for the exact television. A TV may have ports with different ratings, and a port intended for media playback may not be specified to power every connected device. Sony’s guidance for a particular TV design describes USB 2.0 standard power of 5 volts at 500mA (2.5W); the article was last modified July 23, 2019, and that figure is not a rating for all TVs. Sony’s guidance for the referenced TV directs owners to check their own model’s specifications.

| 5 volts at 500mA (2.5W) | Sony’s guidance for the referenced TV design; last modified July 23, 2019. Not a universal TV rating. Sony |
| 5V/1A and 5V/0.5A | Example USB port labels in the cited Hisense manual; they apply to the product covered by that manual. Hisense manual |
| 5V and 500mA or less | LG’s recommendation for external USB hard drives in its guidance dated November 6, 2025; LG says drives exceeding those ratings may not work properly because of insufficient current. LG |
These are examples from specific manufacturers’ guidance, not interchangeable specifications. Compare the TV port’s rated voltage and maximum current with the stick or drive’s input requirements, including any manufacturer instructions about external power. Also check whether the TV supports the intended use, such as USB hard-drive playback or recording, and whether that port turns off when the TV is off.

How to power a streaming stick or external drive safely
Streaming stick
If the stick displays a low-power warning or behaves erratically while powered from the TV, reconnect its cable and use the adapter supplied for that model in a wall outlet. Roku calls wall power using the player’s USB cable and adapter its most reliable solution for the low-power issue it describes. If the included adapter is missing, Roku says 5V/1A is an equivalent adapter specification for the covered players; do not apply that figure to other brands or models without checking their requirements. Roku low-power guidance and Roku setup guidance provide the model-specific context.
External drive
If the drive has its own AC adapter, use it when the TV port cannot meet the drive’s power needs. For a compatible drive without an external adapter, an externally powered USB hub may help, but only if the TV supports that configuration. Roku says a compatible drive without its own adapter may need a powered hub; LG recommends AC-powered hubs or storage in the troubleshooting situation described on its support page. Roku’s external-drive guidance and LG’s guidance explain these options.

Troubleshoot a low-power warning or unrecognized drive
- Identify the symptom. Check for a device-specific low-power message or indicator. On covered Roku players, a flashing red light indicates insufficient power; a solid red light usually signals overheating. A drive that does not start or appear may also be underpowered, but these symptoms alone do not identify the fault. Roku’s indicator guidance distinguishes the light patterns.
- Check both devices’ requirements. Read the TV port label and the TV manual, then compare them with the stick or drive’s input rating and power instructions. Confirm that the TV supports the drive’s intended use; Sony advises checking the exact TV specifications or manual. Sony’s model-specific guidance.
- Try the specified power source. For a streaming stick, use its supplied wall adapter if the TV port is inadequate. For a drive, use its own AC supply if provided. Do not substitute an adapter based only on plug fit; follow the device maker’s rating for the exact model.
- Consider a powered hub only when supported. For a drive without its own supply, consult the TV and drive instructions before adding a self-powered hub. Roku and LG recommend powered options for the compatible configurations described in their guidance. Roku; LG.
- If the problem remains, use model-specific troubleshooting. Check the drive, stick, and TV makers’ steps for the exact models. Continued symptoms with the specified power source do not, on their own, establish which component is damaged.
