A damaged LCD or OLED panel can be especially expensive to replace; for other faults, get a model-specific diagnosis and compare the complete costs before deciding.
Check coverage and rule out simple causes first
Before booking paid work, note the TV’s model number, purchase date and exact symptoms. Check the manufacturer and retailer warranty, then ask whether the fault is covered and who should arrange service. Terms vary, and accidental damage or misuse may be excluded, so do not assume coverage either way.

Also check the selected input or source and the connected device. A source or device problem can look like a television fault. Consult the model’s support material before treating the issue as failed hardware.
Get a diagnosis and a complete, written quote
Ask a repair provider to identify the suspected fault and itemize the total, including diagnosis or technical labor, parts, travel or collection, and tax where applicable. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is due if you decline the repair, whether it is credited if you proceed, and what warranty applies to the repair. A component being replaceable does not automatically make repair worthwhile. The estimate should be for your specific model and fault, not a generic price for a vaguely similar television.
Why panel damage often favors replacement
The screen is often the costly part of a TV to replace. The AEHA warns that replacing a full LCD or OLED panel can cost as much as or more than the TV’s original purchase price. That is a reason to compare options carefully, not a universal verdict: the actual quote, replacement options and your needs determine the better choice.

A 2019 European Commission Joint Research Centre study reported stakeholder input that the screen (LCD module) is the most expensive part to replace. Use repair prices only within their stated scope
As one illustration of how estimates vary by fault and display type, LG UK publishes the following estimated ranges for its UK mainland workshop service. These are for eligible products under six years old, include parts and stated labor/logistics, and were accessed on October 3, 2026. The ranges show why the suspected component matters: even within one manufacturer’s service, the estimate differs by repair type and display technology. They do not establish what another provider will charge for your TV.
Compare the quote with a replacement on equal terms
There is no evidence-backed universal cutoff such as “repair it if the quote is below half the price of a new TV.” Instead, compare the same scope and the things that matter in your home:

- Coverage and responsibility: whether the fault is covered by warranty or other applicable rights, and whether the manufacturer or retailer should handle it.
- Fault confidence: whether the problem is a setting or external device, a confirmed replaceable component, or panel damage.
- Total out-of-pocket repair cost: diagnosis, parts, labor, travel or collection, tax, and the terms if the fault recurs.
- Age and support: whether the model is still supported and parts are available. AEHA says consumers generally consider replacement after about 8–10 years, but that is a Japanese industry FAQ benchmark, not a guaranteed lifespan or universal deadline. AEHA TV guidance
- Replacement fit: cost and suitability of a new TV with the size, picture, connectivity and accessibility features you need.
- Power use: if the choice is close, include electricity consumption in the comparison; AEHA identifies it as a factor to weigh.
A low quote can still be poor value if the fault diagnosis is uncertain or the model is no longer supported. A higher quote may be reasonable if the TV otherwise meets your needs and the repair is covered or comes with useful repair terms. Make the decision from the written estimate and the replacement you would actually buy.
Be cautious with internal DIY repairs
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2019 study says, “Repairing a TV requires electronic knowledge from the repairer and access to the service manual of the product.” It discusses board-level repair and replacement; it does not make opening a set a beginner task. For complex problems, TCL advises using official service centers. Consult manufacturer documentation and use a qualified service provider for internal repairs unless you already have the necessary electronics knowledge and service information.
