Yes. A student-founded company can apply to Microsoft for Startups, but being a student does not itself qualify the company. The key tests are whether the business is a privately held, for-profit software company with a product or service it owns, and whether it meets Microsoft’s other published criteria. If it qualifies, it may receive Azure credits and other support; later credit increases and investor-linked benefits are conditional, not guaranteed.
What Microsoft for Startups offers
Microsoft describes the program as support for startups building and scaling software businesses. Its listed resources include credits for eligible Azure services, Azure AI capabilities, technical guidance, and opportunities to reach customers through Microsoft Marketplace and co-sell resources. The program is not a cash grant, and credits do not mean unlimited free cloud use or guaranteed sales to Microsoft customers. See Microsoft’s program overview.

Can a student-founded company qualify?
Microsoft’s published criteria focus on the company and its product, not the founders’ student status. The overview says an eligible company must:

- Be privately held and for-profit.
- Be headquartered in a country where Azure is available.
- Not have received more than $350,000 in lifetime free Azure credits.
- Not have raised Series C funding or later.
Microsoft lists educational institutions, government organizations, consultancies, agencies, and cryptocurrency mining among the exclusions. A student startup should assess the legal business against these criteria; a school project or educational institution does not qualify simply because it involves software. The credit threshold and program rules can change, so check the live eligibility information before applying.

How to apply
You can apply with an Investor Network referral code or continue without one. A referral is not required to submit an application. Microsoft’s application guide describes the process and what to prepare.
- Gather company and account details. Prepare a personal Microsoft account, phone number, time zone, registered startup name as it appears on legal documents, industry, company address, and payment information. Include a company website if available.
- Choose whether to use a referral code. If a Microsoft Investor Network partner has provided a code, enter it during the application. Otherwise, proceed without one.
- Submit the company application. Provide the requested information about the startup and its product or service.
- Set up Azure. Create or configure the Azure account as instructed so the company can access eligible services and credits if approved.
- Complete any verification requests. Microsoft may ask for more information to verify the business. Its guidance says review typically takes three business days, but verification can take longer.
How credits work—and what the amounts mean
Microsoft’s getting-started guide, last updated August 5, 2026, lists up to $200 in immediate startup credits and says startups may unlock up to $150,000 over time. These are conditional program credits for eligible Azure services, not cash paid to the company. Progression depends on factors Microsoft describes as verified progress, business verification, service adoption, usage patterns, and sustained Azure usage; the amount and pace may vary by startup. Microsoft’s benefits overview, last updated June 16, 2026, separately describes up to $200,000 for eligible Investor Network-backed startups. Later getting-started and investor guidance describes standard program progression up to $150,000. These figures refer to different program contexts and dates, so do not assume every applicant can receive $200,000; check the current terms for the route that applies to the company. Do not increase cloud usage just to pursue a higher credit level. Microsoft identifies usage and progress as factors in eligibility, not as a promise that additional spending will produce a particular credit amount.

Other benefits and Investor Network support
Core program resources include eligible Azure services for building, testing, and deploying applications, Azure AI capabilities, technical resources, and startup guidance. Microsoft also lists Marketplace and co-sell opportunities; these are routes to pursue customer reach, not a guarantee of a listing, sale, or Microsoft customer.
Microsoft says Investor Network-backed startups may qualify for expanded support. Depending on eligibility and program status, this can include Azure Standard Support, technical guidance, GPU-enabled infrastructure subject to availability, and go-to-market resources. Microsoft also lists possible product benefits such as GitHub Enterprise for up to 20 users, Microsoft 365 Business Premium for up to 50 seats, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and LinkedIn Premium. How to decide whether applying makes sense
- Check the company, not just the founder. Confirm that the legal business and owned software product fit the eligibility rules.
- Map the product’s real workload to Azure. Credits help only if the startup’s development, testing, or production needs use eligible services.
- Plan for verification and actual use. Be ready to document the business and use services that fit the product rather than spending to chase a tier.
- Ask about an Investor Network referral if relevant. A partner may provide a code and access to additional conditional benefits, but applicants can apply without one.
For a student team without a qualifying legal company or an owned software product, student status alone is not a shortcut into the program. For a qualifying startup, the sensible reason to apply is that Azure and the available technical or go-to-market resources fit its actual needs—not simply the headline maximum credit amount.
