Yes. Some smart displays recognize enrolled household members for personalized content without Apple Face ID. Google calls its feature Face Match on Nest Hub Max; Amazon calls its opt-in feature Visual ID on certain Echo Show models. These features personalize a display—they are not the same as authenticating someone to unlock an Apple device.
What “recognize” means on a smart display
Here, recognition means a camera-based feature identifies an enrolled person so the display can show content associated with that person’s profile. That differs from presence detection, which can sense that someone has entered or left a space without establishing who they are. It also differs from Face ID’s device-unlocking role.

These features are limited to specific products, not a standard capability on every smart display. The manufacturers’ documentation does not provide a comparable recognition-accuracy benchmark.

Which smart displays offer face-based personalization?
| Feature | Compatible display | What it does | Setup and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Face Match | Google Nest Hub Max | Can proactively show personal information, such as calendar events, to an enrolled user. When multiple enrolled people are in front of the display, Voice Match helps identify who is speaking. | Requires Voice Match. Google says camera sensing can be left off during setup or disabled later; disabling it also disables Face Match and Quick Gestures. See Google’s Face Match setup instructions. |
| Amazon Visual ID | Echo Show 8 (2nd generation or newer), Echo Show 10 (3rd generation), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15, and Echo Show 21 | Uses the recognized person’s Alexa profile to show content such as calendars, reminders, skills, and interests. | Opt-in. Visual ID can be deleted on the device or in the Alexa app. It will not work if the camera is disabled, its shutter is closed, or the camera/microphone disable control is pressed. See Amazon’s Visual ID information. |
How Face Match handles camera data
Google says camera images used for Face Match, Quick Gestures, and Look and Talk are analyzed on the Nest Hub Max itself when camera sensing is enabled. There is an important setup qualification: Face Match enrollment photos are sent to Google during setup and can be reviewed or deleted through My Activity. Google says, “After this setup process, Face Match does not send any video or images to Google.” Google also says images and video used by these camera-sensing features are kept separate from advertising and are not used for ad personalization. These are Google’s stated privacy commitments. Details appear in Google’s Nest privacy commitments.

Turning Face Match off for a device removes the face model from that device, but does not by itself delete the enrollment images used to create it. Those images must be removed separately. Disabling Voice Match also turns off Face Match. Google’s app flow and labels may depend on the active Assistant experience, so follow the current instructions in the Google Home app.
How Visual ID handles enrollment and camera access
Amazon describes Visual ID as an opt-in feature and says you can delete it on the Echo Show or in the Alexa app. Camera access is required: disabling the camera, closing its shutter, or pressing the camera/microphone disable control prevents Visual ID from working. Amazon’s Visual ID instructions cover enrollment and controls.
