Yes—with free software, a YouTube channel, an existing computer and a suitable internet connection. OBS Studio can send a prerecorded sermon or playlist to YouTube Live without a paid streaming-software subscription. But “free” does not cover electricity, internet data, equipment the church needs to buy, or the people who keep the setup working. A truly continuous channel also needs a plan for interruptions, stream handoffs and copyright clearance.
What you need—and what “free” means
The no-subscription route is YouTube Live plus OBS Studio, the free, open-source broadcasting app. YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a feed from software such as OBS; the cited YouTube documentation does not list a per-stream charge (YouTube: Go live with an encoder; OBS Studio).
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming available and no active restriction.
- A computer that can run OBS and remain powered on while streaming.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream.
- A sermon video, audio track or playlist, plus permission to use every audio and visual element in it.
- Someone able to monitor the stream and respond if the computer, power, internet or YouTube feed fails.
For an Indian church, the actual data and electricity costs depend on its provider, plan and location. The available YouTube guidance does not establish local ISP prices or guarantee a particular connection’s speed. Treat this as a low-cash-cost setup, not a zero-cost service.
Set up a free OBS stream to YouTube
1. Check the channel before planning the first broadcast
Verify the church’s YouTube channel and confirm that it has no live-stream restrictions. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day the channel is meant to launch (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming; YouTube Help: Live streaming tips).

2. Install OBS and prepare the sermon material
Install OBS Studio from its official site on a church-owned or otherwise suitable computer. In OBS, add a Media Source for a sermon video and enable looping if it should repeat. For a sequence of recordings, arrange them as a playlist using OBS’s media-source workflow. A static visual with sermon audio is another option. Check the complete recording—not only the sermon—for music, lyrics, images, slides and third-party clips that the church is allowed to use.
3. Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or connect using the available account workflow).
- Return to YouTube Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream health, then start streaming from OBS when ready.
A stream key gives access to the broadcast destination; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it outside the small group responsible for streaming. YouTube also supports RTMPS, an encrypted transport option for encoders that support it (YouTube: Go live with an encoder).
4. Match the stream to the church’s upload connection
Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain, then test from the actual church network and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload capacity spare beyond the stream’s bitrate; that headroom helps absorb ordinary network variation (YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming). A speed test at another time or on a different network cannot establish that the church connection will remain stable around the clock.

Plan for genuine 24/7 operation
A looping video can repeat indefinitely inside OBS, but that alone does not make the channel reliably continuous. The computer, OBS, power and internet connection must all keep working, and somebody needs to notice and respond when they do not. Neither OBS nor YouTube can guarantee uninterrupted electricity, broadband, device uptime or human monitoring.

Do not depend on one broadcast running all day and producing a complete replay. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). For an all-day schedule, plan streams shorter than 12 hours and deliberately start the next segment. If preserving sermons matters, keep a separate local recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.
Make interruptions manageable
- Keep the computer plugged into reliable power and prevent routine sleep or shutdown while OBS is running.
- Use a wired network connection if practical, and avoid saturating the church’s upload bandwidth with other activity.
- Assign a named person to check the live preview and respond to a dropped feed, power cut or internet failure.
- Write down who holds the stream key, how to restart OBS and how to start the next scheduled stream.
- Test the full handoff and recovery process before advertising a continuous schedule.
Clear copyright before putting sermons on a loop
A church service is not automatically cleared just because it is religious or prerecorded. Sermon recordings may include worship music, backing tracks, lyrics, images, slides or third-party clips. The church needs the rights or permission needed for each element. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a broadcast; even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID (YouTube Help: Copyright on YouTube; YouTube Terms of Service).

Before scheduling a recording, document permissions and check whether any licence covers livestreaming and repeated playback, not just an in-person service. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid; it does not replace permission from the relevant rights holders.
What the free route costs the church in practice
- Software: OBS Studio is free and open source.
- Platform: YouTube provides the encoder workflow; the cited documentation does not identify a per-stream fee.
- Running costs: electricity, internet service and data still apply. The church’s actual Indian provider rates and available upload speed are location-specific.
- Equipment: an existing computer and basic setup may be enough to start. YouTube’s encoder guidance says expensive equipment is not required; additional audio or video hardware is optional.
- Donations and monetization: YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships as possible live-stream revenue features, subject to channel eligibility and settings. They are not guaranteed income and should not be counted on to cover operating costs (YouTube Partner Program overview).

The channel cannot go live yet
Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility first. A new activation can take up to 24 hours, and a recent restriction can prevent streaming. Allow for activation time before the planned launch rather than troubleshooting OBS alone.
YouTube receives no signal from OBS
Confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube service and current stream key, then verify that streaming has actually been started in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview before announcing the stream. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.

The stream is unstable or drops
Check YouTube stream health and test upload capacity on the same connection used by OBS. Reduce the outgoing bitrate if it is too close to available upload capacity, preserving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Check for competing uploads, Wi-Fi interruptions, power loss or the computer sleeping.
The sermon stream is interrupted despite a licence
Review the exact song, recording, backing track or visual that triggered the interruption. Confirm that the licence covers YouTube livestreams and repeated playback, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting the channel in Content ID when applicable.
A long stream has no complete replay
YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter planned segments and maintain a separate local recording when an archive is important.
