A scheduled YouTube broadcast can use a different stream key from a reusable key. YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies the previous stream’s settings, including its key, but you can review and change the scheduled stream’s settings. Select the key for that event, then use that event’s stream URL and key in your encoder.
Reusable key and Reuse settings are different things
A custom stream key is a key you can select again for future streams. YouTube’s Reuse settings option is a scheduling shortcut: it copies a previous stream’s metadata, settings and stream key. Reuse does not automatically create a fresh key. YouTube Help explains how reuse and stream key settings work.

That means you can reuse an earlier setup and still change the key attached to the scheduled event. YouTube’s documentation supports editing settings when scheduling and after reusing settings; it does not say scheduled events must each have unique keys.

How to set the key for a scheduled broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open the Manage tab, and choose Schedule stream.
- Choose Create new for a new setup, or Reuse settings to copy a previous stream. If you reuse settings, remember that the old stream key is copied too.
- Review the scheduled stream’s settings and select the intended stream key. You can edit settings when scheduling and change them after reusing settings.
- In your encoder, enter the stream URL and key associated with this scheduled broadcast, then start sending video.
- Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. When it is ready, select Go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Check the encoder matches the scheduled event
The scheduled event’s selected key and the key configured in your encoder must match. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If you send video using a different key, the scheduled event may not receive that encoder feed. Verify the key on the event before starting the encoder.

If you need a reusable custom key
In the stream settings, choose Select stream key → Create new stream key, set its preferences, and select that key from the list. A custom key can be selected again for future streams; it is separate from the act of copying a previous event’s settings.
If a key may be compromised
Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder to use the new key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Do not keep sending video with the old encoder setting after resetting it; the encoder must use the replacement key.

Special case: YouTube dual streams
YouTube’s third-party encoder instructions for dual streaming describe selecting a second key for the vertical stream and checking that each format goes to the intended key. That is a specific dual-stream configuration, not a requirement for an ordinary scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s current Help page also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; these are platform limits and may change. See Get started with live streaming.
