A robot vacuum can take over much of the routine floor upkeep in some homes, especially frequent pickup on hard floors. It is not a dependable replacement for every conventional vacuuming or mopping task: embedded carpet dirt, stairs, upholstery, tight spaces, spills and stubborn stains may still call for hands-on cleaning. Whether you can retire a manual vacuum or mop depends on your floors, cleaning expectations and the specific robot’s performance.
What robot vacuums do well—and where they fall short
Robots are strongest at frequent maintenance cleaning: scheduled passes can pick up loose dust, crumbs and hair before they accumulate. Dyson describes this as distinct from deep cleaning, which targets embedded debris and stubborn stains. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent test result. Dyson explains the distinction.

Performance also depends on the surface. In its 2025 consumer guidance, Australian consumer group CHOICE reported averages from its recent robot-vacuum reviews of 88% on hard floors, 26% on carpet, 54% for pet hair and 65% for corners and edges. These are CHOICE’s test-set averages, not market-wide measurements or a prediction for any individual model. CHOICE’s 2025 overview describes its testing and results.

It may replace many routine passes if your home is mostly open hard flooring and your goal is to keep loose everyday debris under control. A robot is less likely to replace a conventional vacuum if you need to remove hair or dirt embedded in carpet, clean stairs or upholstery, or reach tight spaces.

CHOICE vacuum expert Adrian Lini says robots often do a good job picking up pet hair on hard floors when programmed regularly, but can perform badly on carpet because they lack the force or agitation of a stick vacuum for embedded hair. CHOICE’s figures above likewise show why hard-floor and carpet performance should be considered separately. CHOICE’s guidance and testing context.
Manufacturer guidance points to similar limits: Dyson lists deep or high-traffic carpet, furniture, stairs and tight vertical spaces among tasks for a traditional vacuum; ECOVACS also identifies stairs, upholstery, cars, thick carpet, corners and deep cleaning as areas where manual cleaning remains useful. These are practical recommendations from manufacturers, not comparative independent tests. ECOVACS discusses what a robot can and cannot replace.

Can a robot mop replace a manual mop?
A robot mop can reduce the effort of routine upkeep on hard floors, but a mop attachment alone does not establish that it can replace manual mopping. CHOICE evaluates stain removal and carpet avoidance separately, reflecting that mopping performance involves more than whether a device has a water tank or pad. CHOICE explains its robot-vacuum test areas.
TechRadar’s reviewer cautions that a large spill can stick to a robot’s mop cloth and be spread across the floor, while dried stains may resist the robot’s scrubbing. A robot may be convenient for light, regular maintenance; deal with spills promptly and use a manual mop for stubborn or heavily soiled patches. TechRadar’s discussion of robot mopping.

How to protect rugs and carpets during mop runs
Carpet protection is model-specific. Some robots detect carpet, lift or remove their mop pads, or let you set app-based no-mop zones. Do not assume a wet or dirty pad will always stay off rugs: CHOICE warns that rugs can still be at risk. Check the exact model’s instructions and app controls before scheduling a mop run, and configure no-mop areas where needed.
- Check the manufacturer’s documented behavior. Confirm whether the model avoids carpet, lifts its mop pad, or requires pad removal before a mop run.
- Set no-mop zones if available. Use the app’s room or zone controls for rugs and carpeted areas; verify the map before running the robot.
- Test the setup before relying on a schedule. Observe a run around rugs and adjust boundaries if the robot approaches them with a wet pad.
For example, iRobot describes the Roomba Combo i5 as vacuuming and wet-mopping hard floors and offering an app option to skip rooms with rugs or carpets. That illustrates a feature on one model, not a recommendation or a guarantee for other robots. iRobot’s Roomba Combo i5 product information.

Choose based on your floors and cleaning needs
| What to assess | A robot is more likely to cover routine work when… | Keep a manual tool for… |
|---|---|---|
| Floor coverage | Most floors are open hard surfaces, with rugs the robot can handle safely. | Thick or high-pile carpet, mixed surfaces the robot cannot navigate reliably, and stairs. |
| Cleaning goal | You mainly want frequent pickup of loose dust, crumbs and hair. | Deep cleaning, embedded dirt, high-traffic carpet or targeted spot cleaning. |
| Mopping need | You want regular light upkeep on hard floors. | Spills, dried stains or heavy soil that need controlled, hands-on removal. |
| Hair and edges | You need regular maintenance on open hard floors. | Hair embedded in carpet, corners or edges the robot does not clean well. |
| Access and upkeep | The robot can reach the areas you want cleaned and you can maintain it. | Stairs, upholstery, tight spaces, and tasks that require more precise access. |
CHOICE notes that robot vacuums need regular wheel and brush maintenance and can be more complex to repair. Its 2025 consumer article also reported that the 11 robot vacuums in its described current test ranged from A$169 to A$3,999, with a median around A$1,799. Those are a dated, Australia-specific snapshot of the models in that test, not current universal prices. CHOICE’s 2025 article.

Quick Recap
A practical decision
- A robot may be enough for routine upkeep if your floors are mostly hard, you want frequent pickup rather than deep cleaning, and you are comfortable handling occasional missed spots manually.
- Keep a conventional vacuum if your home has substantial carpet, stairs or upholstery, or if you need reliable removal of embedded dirt and hair.
- Keep a manual mop for spills, dried marks and heavy soil, even if a robot mop handles regular light maintenance.
- Judge the exact model, not the category label. Compare independent results for hard-floor pickup, carpet, pet hair, edges and stain removal, then check its carpet-protection behavior and maintenance requirements.
