Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A free tier can keep a demo of a React + Node.js video downloader online, but it is not a dependable home for an app that must stay available. The free web services on Render and Railway either sleep when idle or lose local files on restart, and Vercel caps how long a proxied request can run. For a first always-on deployment, a small VPS is the most direct fit, with the React build served from a static host. The figures below are as published by each provider in early October 2026. Plan limits and prices change, so recheck them before you commit.
Why a free tier is not a dependable home for this app
Free plans are built for prototypes and low-stakes demos. A video downloader is harder on a host than a typical website. It holds connections open while work runs, uses CPU and memory, may write temporary files to disk, and sends large volumes of data back to users. Each of those is a point where a free plan can fail.

Render free web services
Render’s documentation says a free Node.js web service spins down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic and takes about a minute to wake when the next request arrives. Files written to the local filesystem are lost on restart, redeploy, or spin-down, and free services have no persistent disk. Render’s Deploy for Free documentation states: “Do not use them for production applications.” Free Postgres databases expire after 30 days, and the free allowance is 750 instance hours per workspace per calendar month (Render’s current documentation, checked in 2026).
In practice, the first download after an idle stretch can time out or look broken, and a half-finished file stored locally disappears on the next deploy.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Railway free plan
Railway’s Free plan includes $1 of monthly credit. Its free service resource maximums are one replica, 0.5 GB RAM, one vCPU, and 1 GB of ephemeral storage. Usage beyond the credit may require a paid plan (Railway’s current pricing documentation, checked in 2026). That makes it useful for testing a deployment end to end, but 0.5 GB of RAM and 1 GB of ephemeral storage leave little room for concurrent downloads or large temporary files.
Vercel
Vercel’s limits page, last updated February 3, 2026, lists a 120-second proxied request timeout on the Hobby and Pro plans. Its fair-use guidance flags media hosting for hot-linking. Vercel is a good home for the React frontend. It is a poor home for a backend that returns large files or runs jobs longer than two minutes, and downloaded video files should not be served from it.

| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | Virtual server that runs continuously until you stop it | Set by your own processes; no platform timeout listed | 10 GiB SSD ($4 plan) or 25 GiB SSD ($6 plan) | $4/month: 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 500 GiB transfer. $6/month: 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 1,000 GiB transfer. Per-second billing began January 1, 2026 (DigitalOcean pricing page, checked in 2026) | Simple always-on Node service with full control |
| Hetzner Cloud | Virtual server that runs continuously until you stop it | Set by your own processes | Not stated in this comparison | Cost-optimized instances, billed hourly and capped at the monthly price. Prices vary by region and configuration. The cloud-server service agreement commits to commercially reasonable efforts toward 99.9% monthly availability, subject to exclusions (Hetzner’s current agreement, checked in 2026) | Comparable VPS when you are comfortable administering a server |
Provider availability commitments describe the infrastructure, not your application. A 99.9% effort from a server provider does not guarantee that your downloader will respond correctly, and it does not cover a crashed process or a full disk.
Which paid option to choose first
The recommendation here is a small VPS for the backend, with the React build on a static host. The reasons are concrete: a VPS runs your process continuously, keeps local files until you remove them, and has no request timeout imposed by the platform. The trade-off is that you own patching, firewall rules, monitoring, TLS renewal, and recovery.
DigitalOcean Basic Droplet
The $6/month plan (1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GiB SSD, 1,000 GiB transfer) is the more realistic floor for a modest Node service that handles a few downloads at once. The $4/month plan (512 MiB RAM) is tight once Node, a reverse proxy, and any temporary file work share the machine. Treat both as starting points, not capacity guarantees.

Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner is worth comparing when its regional price for a comparable server is lower and its included bandwidth fits your expected egress. Because prices vary by region and configuration, compare the exact server type you would run against the DigitalOcean plan, including RAM, vCPU, storage, and transfer.

Separate the frontend and backend. The React build is static files, and the Node API and any download worker have different needs. This split also keeps video traffic away from your frontend host.

- Deploy the React frontend as a static site. Vercel is a reasonable choice for this part. Do not route video file responses through it.
- Run the Node API as a persistent process on the VPS. Use a systemd unit with
Restart=always, or an equivalent process manager such as PM2, so the service comes back after a crash or reboot. - Put a reverse proxy in front of the API. Nginx or Caddy can terminate TLS and forward requests to the Node port. Keep the Node process bound to localhost.
- Do not hold one HTTP request open for a long job. Accept the request, create a job ID, process the download in a worker, and let the client poll a status endpoint. This is the more robust pattern for long-running work, and it avoids platform timeouts.
- Store finished files in object storage or on a managed disk with a cleanup schedule. Delete temporary files after delivery, and estimate object storage costs separately from the server.
- Add monitoring, backups, and a spend alert before opening the service to users.
One VPS can run both the API and the worker at first. Split them onto separate machines when worker CPU use starts slowing API responses.
How to size the server
Measure before you upgrade. Track these values for at least a week of real use:
- Response duration for each download request and each job
- Peak RAM and CPU use while several jobs run at once
- Typical and largest file size
- Number of concurrent jobs at peak
- Disk use, including temporary files
- Monthly outbound transfer (egress)
Transfer is often the limit that surprises people. As a hypothetical example, 5,000 downloads a month averaging 150 MB is about 750 GB, or roughly 698 GiB, which fits within the 1,000 GiB listed for the $6 DigitalOcean plan with little margin. The same 5,000 downloads averaging 300 MB come to about 1,397 GiB, which exceeds that allowance. Your own file sizes will determine which case applies.
Before launch: rights and terms
- Read the terms of each site the app downloads from, and confirm that the intended downloading is permitted.
- Confirm you have the rights to any content you store or deliver.
- Read the host’s acceptable-use policy. Vercel’s policy describes how it handles valid copyright notices, and other providers’ terms differ.
This article does not reach a legal conclusion. The answer depends on which sites the app targets, what content it handles, and the jurisdiction where it runs, and those details determine the position.
Troubleshooting common hosting problems
- The first request after a quiet period takes about a minute. A free Render web service has spun down. Move the API to an always-on process such as a VPS.
- Large downloads are cut off at about 120 seconds on Vercel. The proxied request timeout has been reached. Move the backend off Vercel and use the job-and-polling pattern.
- Files disappear after a deploy. The service is using a local filesystem without persistence. Use a VPS disk that survives restarts, or object storage.
- Responses slow down when several downloads run. RAM or CPU is saturated. Limit concurrent jobs in the worker and check whether the plan has enough memory.
- The bill rises unexpectedly. Outbound transfer is the likely cause. Check monthly egress against the plan’s allowance and set a spend alert.
Bottom line
A free tier can host a demo of this app, but it cannot promise that the downloader will stay live. For always-on operation, a small VPS is the practical first choice, starting with a $6/month DigitalOcean Basic Droplet or a comparable Hetzner server, and measure your real workload before you scale.
