Yes—a Raspberry Pi can run encoder software that sends video to YouTube Live, and looping prerecorded video is technically plausible. But the available official examples do not certify a particular Pi setup for uninterrupted 24/7 playback. Reliability depends on the Pi’s workload, power, cooling, network, media format and recovery plan; treat it as a DIY system that needs testing and monitoring, not a guaranteed always-on appliance.
What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—do
A Pi can act as the local computer running an encoder and sending its output to YouTube Live. Raspberry Pi’s official site documented a Pi Zero project using FFmpeg and Docker in 2017, while YouTube’s setup documentation explains how an encoder connects using YouTube’s server URL and a stream key. These examples establish that the general encoder workflow is possible; they do not prove that a specific Pi model and software combination can run a prerecorded loop without interruption for 24 hours a day.

This is for playback of uploaded or stored video through an encoder, not a live camera feed. The Pi must stay powered on, connected to the internet and able to recover from failures. YouTube receives the stream and creates playback versions for viewers; the Pi does not need to generate every viewer resolution itself.

Is a Pi 5 a sensible starting point?
Raspberry Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD and PCIe storage options, and hardware decoding for 4Kp60 HEVC. Raspberry Pi recommends a quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply and says active cooling helps the board perform best. See the Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.

Hardware decoding is not a promise that the Pi can transcode every video format in real time. For a low-maintenance setup, choose media compatible with the encoder’s output profile and avoid unnecessary re-encoding where the software workflow permits. A source that forces heavy conversion can make the Pi work much harder than straightforward playback.
Set up a YouTube stream from the Pi
- Enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the intended start. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Prepare the Pi and video. Install and configure an encoder such as FFmpeg; Raspberry Pi’s historical project used FFmpeg with Docker. Store the video on reliable local storage, and check that its format can be handled by your chosen workflow without overloading the Pi.
- Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube’s live control room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter them in the encoder. The stream key links the encoder output to your channel, so keep it private and do not publish it or include it in a public script.
- Set an output profile that suits the source and connection. Choose resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio configuration. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health rather than assuming a setting will work on every connection.
- Start with a monitored test. Confirm that YouTube receives the video and audio, check stream health in the live control room, and watch for dropped frames or interruptions. Test the actual content and intended duration before relying on unattended playback.
- Plan recovery and session restarts. Decide what will restart the encoder after a process failure and what will happen after a power or network outage. Monitor the stream after launch; no reviewed official source guarantees continuous uptime for a Pi configuration.
YouTube ingest settings to use as a baseline
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

- 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
- 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution

| H.264 output profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not measured Raspberry Pi performance figures. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain reliably and test it; YouTube advises running an upload-speed test. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source where practical, and configure the encoder’s keyframe interval to the recommended two seconds without exceeding four.
What makes a 24/7 Pi stream fragile?
- Power and heat: An always-on board needs an appropriate power supply and cooling. Power interruptions or thermal strain can stop the encoder.
- Home internet: The stream depends on the local connection and sustained upload capacity. A brief outage can interrupt delivery even if the Pi and video remain healthy.
- Encoding load: Media that requires conversion may demand more processing than compatible playback. The Pi 5’s HEVC decoding specification does not establish its ability to transcode every source in real time.
- Process and session management: A script or encoder can exit, the Pi can reboot, or a broadcast session can end. A continuously available channel needs monitoring and a defined restart procedure.
- Archive limits: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single stream running beyond that threshold will be archived intact; plan broadcast sessions accordingly. The threshold is described in YouTube’s setup guidance.
Copyright and monetization are separate from keeping the stream online
A successful encoder connection does not establish that you have the right to stream the video or that the channel can monetize it. Use media you are entitled to broadcast. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced output can be ineligible as “inauthentic content”; its reused-content policy applies channel-wide and can make copied material with minimal changes ineligible even when the creator has permission. Copyright enforcement is a separate issue. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Neither looping video, permission alone nor using a Raspberry Pi guarantees monetization.

DIY Pi versus a cloud option
A Pi keeps the encoder and its operating responsibilities at home: you provide hardware, power, cooling, network access, media preparation, monitoring and recovery. A cloud service shifts the always-on playback workload away from your home computer, though it does not remove the need to configure the YouTube stream or comply with YouTube rules. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streams; that listing establishes relevance, not an endorsement.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider if you do not want a Pi and home connection responsible for continuous playback. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives each account one free day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
