Yes—a Raspberry Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live with an encoder such as FFmpeg. But a working stream is not proof of dependable unattended operation: the available Pi examples do not establish a 24/7 uptime record for any model or setup. Reliability depends on the whole system, including encoding, sustained upload, power, heat, source files, and recovery when a process, network, or host fails.
If you want to run it yourself, use YouTube’s ingest settings, test the actual content and connection, and supervise the encoder. If you would rather not keep a local computer running, StreamNeo is the first cloud alternative to consider: it loops uploaded video to YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

What “reliable” means for a Raspberry Pi stream
A Pi-based FFmpeg workflow is technically feasible. A community forum example describes sending a video file to YouTube over RTMP, while a separate open-source project documents a Raspberry Pi-oriented FFmpeg and systemd setup designed to recover from faults. Neither establishes independently verified long-term uptime or proves that a particular Pi model will run every video profile continuously.
For a 24/7 channel, reliability means more than successfully starting FFmpeg. The source must play and loop as intended; the Pi must handle the chosen decode and encode workload; the network must sustain the upload; and power, temperature, operating-system startup, process supervision, and YouTube’s broadcast state must all behave correctly. You need to test the specific deployment rather than assume a model or configuration is suitable.

Choose a stream profile the Pi and connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current requirements and recommendations.
Match bitrate to resolution and frame rate
YouTube recommends 3 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at 720p30 and 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a Pi can encode those settings or that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Leave upload headroom above the stream’s encoded rate, and check sustained upload performance rather than relying on a brief peak measurement.

| H.264 profile | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | YouTube’s ingest recommendation; Pi encoding capacity and connection suitability must be tested. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s ingest recommendation; Pi encoding capacity and connection suitability must be tested. |
Those figures cover video bitrate, not the total stream rate including audio and network overhead. Start with a moderate profile the hardware and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual content and checking stream health during the test.
Avoid unnecessary transcoding when possible
If the file is already compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, a workflow that copies the encoded video rather than re-encoding it can reduce CPU work. The documented Pi-oriented project includes a low-CPU video-copy option, but copying is appropriate only when the source’s codec, audio, frame rate, and other stream characteristics meet the needs of your chosen workflow and YouTube ingest. If they do not, transcode and validate the Pi’s sustained performance at the selected settings.

Prepare YouTube Live before configuring FFmpeg
- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned launch. YouTube documents this setup in its live streaming getting-started guide.
- Create or select the broadcast and obtain its ingest details. Add the YouTube server URL and stream key to your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script, or share a screenshot that exposes it.
- Configure FFmpeg for a YouTube-compatible stream. Use RTMPS if your encoder workflow supports it, select compatible video and audio formats, use constant bitrate encoding, and set a 2-second keyframe interval without exceeding 4 seconds.
- Test the complete path before relying on it. Run the actual source file with representative audio and motion over the intended internet connection. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that playback, audio, looping, and the broadcast lifecycle work as expected.
The source material documents a community FFmpeg example but does not establish a single command or set of flags as suitable for every Pi, source file, or YouTube broadcast configuration. Validate the command against the installed FFmpeg build, media codecs, and YouTube’s current requirements instead of copying an unverified one-size-fits-all command.
Build recovery into the deployment—and test it
An unattended stream can stop for reasons beyond an encoder error. The Pi may reboot or lose power; the network may drop; FFmpeg may exit; the source may fail to loop; or YouTube may stop accepting the stream. A Raspberry Pi-oriented open-source project describes using FFmpeg with systemd and recovery logic for camera loss, encoder crashes, network interruptions, and reboots. Treat that as an implementation pattern, not a guarantee that recovery will work without configuration and testing.

Check each failure layer
- Encoder process: Configure a supervisor to detect an exited FFmpeg process and attempt a restart. Confirm that a restart actually works with your source and settings.
- Network and ingest: Test how the encoder behaves after a brief internet interruption and how it reconnects to YouTube. A process restart alone may not restore every broadcast state.
- Host and power: Confirm the Pi starts after a reboot and that the operating system, storage, and power supply remain stable in the intended setup.
- Playback and source: Verify that the file repeats as intended and that audio stays synchronized. A running encoder does not by itself prove the source is playing correctly.
- Monitoring: Have a way to notice a failed or unhealthy stream. Check YouTube stream health and relevant system or supervisor messages during operation.
There is no universal test duration in the available guidance, and a short successful trial cannot establish months of uninterrupted operation. Test long enough to exercise the actual source, upload path, restart behavior, and operating conditions; continue monitoring after launch.
When a Pi is—and is not—the right choice
A Pi can make sense when you want local control, already have suitable hardware, can test the desired encoding workload, and are prepared to maintain the power, network, software, monitoring, and recovery path. The available evidence does not establish comparative capacity for Raspberry Pi 4 versus Pi 5, or a definitive configuration for continuous service.

A more capable local computer or hardware encoder is another local option, but it still depends on your site’s power, internet connection, and recovery plan. A cloud service moves playback and stream operation off your home device, reducing the need to keep a local encoder running while introducing dependence on the provider. Compare options by ongoing cost, terms, monitoring, and the recovery responsibilities you are willing to take on; verify current provider plans and availability directly.
Or let it run in the cloud
