It can run software that loops video and sends it to YouTube Live, but the available Raspberry Pi specifications and performance information do not guarantee stable, uninterrupted streaming for a particular video, setup, or home internet connection. Test the actual workload before relying on it.
What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—tell you
Raspberry Pi documents that “The Raspberry Pi 5 has H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding.” That is a decoding capability, not evidence of a hardware H.264 encoder. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note reports software encoding at 1080p30 on a single CPU core, but that vendor-published figure does not establish continuous streaming stability for your files and setup. The note’s PDF was not available to verify directly, so treat that performance figure as lower-confidence evidence, not a guarantee. Raspberry Pi computer documentation

For a loop, the work depends on whether the files can be sent without conversion or must be decoded and re-encoded, as well as the output resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, cooling, and upload connection. No specific memory size, power supply, cooling arrangement, software command, or operating duration is established as sufficient.
Set up a Pi-to-YouTube workflow
- Check the channel’s eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check the current eligibility requirements in YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to create or schedule the live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key. Enter those credentials in the encoder running on the Pi. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel. See YouTube Help: Stream with an encoder.
- Choose an encoder workflow that loops local files. The Pi needs software that can play your selected videos repeatedly and send a continuous RTMP or RTMPS stream. The sources here do not validate a Pi-specific application, command, or configuration, so confirm that your chosen software supports both looping playback and YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- Start conservatively and test the real content. A modest 720p30 or 1080p30 profile is a sensible starting point if your files and workflow support it. Use the same video, motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate planned for the broadcast; check CPU load and temperature, dropped frames, network stability, and YouTube’s stream-health messages during an extended test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming an encoder will perform reliably. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Keep an eye on the running stream. Confirm that the video is still advancing, audio remains in sync, and Studio continues to report healthy ingest. A brief successful test does not demonstrate that the Pi, power, cooling, and internet connection will hold up for an all-day run.
YouTube encoder settings to use as reference points
YouTube’s published 2026 H.264 settings give the following reference bitrates. They are YouTube’s guidance, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader

| Output | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission and advises matching stream quality to the available connection; check upload speed and watch Studio’s stream-health feedback. These settings are not a Pi-specific performance certification. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates
Children’s videos: set the audience and check rights
Mark the audience accurately
Creators must tell YouTube whether content is Made for Kids, regardless of where they live. Set the audience classification in YouTube Studio based on the content; YouTube warns against relying on automated systems to make that decision. For a Made for Kids live stream, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may be shown. YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience

Use content you have the right to broadcast
Only loop video and audio that you are entitled to stream. YouTube identifies an active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast as reasons live streaming may be restricted. Permission to use material and eligibility to monetize it are separate questions: YouTube says highly repetitive or reused content may not qualify for the Partner Program, and permission or ownership alone does not guarantee monetization approval. YouTube Help: Copyright strikes · YouTube channel monetization policies
Plan for the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that one stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. If you need a replay, do not assume an uninterrupted all-day broadcast will be saved; plan around the documented limit and confirm current behavior in YouTube Studio. When to use the Pi—and when another approach may fit better
A local Pi setup gives you control over the files and encoder, but it also makes the stream depend on the Pi, its power and cooling, and your home upload connection. If you need a continuous prerecorded-video stream with less reliance on a device at home, YouTube’s encoder information lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streams and AJA HELO Plus hardware for scheduling prerecorded media. YouTube’s listing is not an endorsement. Compare options by operating cost, local control, recovery after a failure, monitoring effort, and whether you need an archive; confirm each provider’s current capabilities and terms directly. Troubleshooting a Pi stream
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, that the channel can currently go live, and that the encoder is running and connected to the internet.
- Studio reports poor stream health or viewers see buffering: Check upload speed and stability, then lower the output resolution or bitrate and test again. YouTube advises choosing quality to match the connection.
- Dropped frames or a stream that degrades over time: Check CPU load and temperature and confirm whether the workflow is re-encoding. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, then repeat a prolonged test with the actual files; the published Pi performance figure does not prove all-day stability.
- The video stops advancing: Check that the playback software is configured to loop the playlist and that it can read every file in sequence. The Pi-to-YouTube workflow must keep playback and encoder output running continuously.
- A replay is missing after a long broadcast: Do not assume a stream of 12 hours or more will be archived automatically. For an archive, plan a stream under the documented threshold and verify the behavior in Studio.
- Live streaming is restricted or a copyright issue appears: Review channel eligibility and restrictions, then check the rights for both video and audio. A stream match or copyright strike can affect live access.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not depend on a Pi and home connection, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
