Yes—conditionally, if you mean looping a video file stored locally. Raspberry Pi Ltd specifies H.264 and MPEG-4 video decoding up to 1080p30 for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, and Raspberry Pi OS supports hardware-accelerated playback with VLC. That is a supported capability, not a guarantee that every file or installation will run without interruption forever. If you mean playing YouTube’s website continuously in a browser, reliability and resolution are much less certain.
First, distinguish a local video loop from a YouTube browser stream
A local loop plays a video file saved on microSD or USB storage. Once playback starts, it does not need an internet connection to fetch the video. This is the better-supported approach for signage or fixed content: the Pi 3 B+ has published H.264 and MPEG-4 decode capability up to 1080p30, and VLC on Raspberry Pi OS uses hardware acceleration. A browser stream is different: the Pi must receive YouTube’s current stream format, decode it in the browser, and keep the network connection working. The board’s H.264 specification alone does not establish which YouTube videos, codecs, browser builds, or resolutions will play smoothly. A 2026 Raspberry Pi Forums discussion includes an individual Pi 3 B+ report of substantial CPU load at 480p, but such reports are anecdotal and cannot establish a universal limit. Raspberry Pi Forums discussion.
What the Pi 3 B+ specifications do—and do not—promise
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2025 product brief identifies the 3 B+ as a BCM2837B0-based board with 1GB of memory, microSD storage, full-size HDMI, and a 5V/2.5A micro-USB input. Its published multimedia specification is H.264 and MPEG-4 decoding up to 1080p30, plus H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. The decode figure is not a universal playback guarantee: codec profile, frame rate, container, file quality, player version, and OS configuration can affect results. The cited sources do not set one bitrate threshold that guarantees compatibility for every video.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Raspberry Pi OS documentation says VLC uses hardware acceleration and supports many popular audio and video formats. It notes fullscreen playback may be smoother in some circumstances. Adafruit’s Video Looper 2 guide describes looping local files, returning to the first video after the last, and VLC playback of many H.264 files, including 720p and 1080p using the Pi GPU. These are useful implementation paths, not proof that every encode or installation will play indefinitely. Adafruit Raspberry Pi Video Looper 2 guide.
Set up a local loop with VLC
- Prepare compatible media. Start with an H.264 video at or below 1080p30. If the file stutters, try a lower resolution or frame rate, or re-encode it to a more suitable format. The published specification does not define a bitrate or profile that will work in every case.
- Store the file locally. Put the video on the Pi’s microSD card or attached USB storage. Check that the card has room for both the operating system and media; required capacity depends on the file and OS.
- Install or open VLC. In the full Raspberry Pi OS, VLC is documented as preinstalled. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not include it by default; consult the current Raspberry Pi OS playback page for its package instructions before deployment.
- Test playback before making it continuous. Play the exact file and display combination you plan to use. Try fullscreen mode if appropriate; Raspberry Pi OS documentation says it can improve smoothness in some circumstances.
- Configure the repeat behavior. Enable repeat or looping in the player, or use a video-looper configuration. Adafruit’s guide describes a setup that plays a sequence and returns to the first video after the last.
- Run a burn-in test. Leave the intended files, player, display, power supply, and enclosure running for a meaningful period before relying on the setup. Watch for stutter, player exits, reboots, temperature rise, or storage errors; the available sources do not certify a particular duration as proof of indefinite uptime.
For command-line playback, Raspberry Pi OS documentation gives VLC examples including cvlc for playback without the graphical interface and the --fullscreen option. Refer to the linked documentation for the current syntax and package instructions for your OS release.

Can it play YouTube continuously in Chromium?
Possibly, but there is no dependable resolution promise for every Pi 3 B+ setup. Browser streaming depends on the current browser and YouTube delivery formats as well as hardware decoding, network stability, and software configuration. Hardware support for H.264 does not mean the browser will always receive or use an H.264 stream.

Power, heat, and continuous-operation checks
- Power: The board’s product brief specifies a 5V/2.5A micro-USB input. Use a sound supply and cable that can provide the board’s required input; weak supplies, poor cables, and attached peripherals can complicate stability.
- Temperature: Raspberry Pi Ltd lists an operating temperature range of 0–50°C for the board. Its computer hardware documentation says the Pi 3 B+ has a default 60°C soft thermal limit, at which clock speed falls from 1.4GHz to 1.2GHz and voltage is reduced slightly. At 85°C, both Arm cores and the GPU are throttled back. Keep the board ventilated and check temperatures under the actual workload. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
- Storage: A local loop depends on the microSD card or other storage, as well as the OS and player configuration. Keep a copy of the media elsewhere and have a recovery plan if the storage or OS becomes unusable.
- Reliability figure: The 2025 product brief lists 378,000 hours MTBF under “Ground Benign” conditions. This is not a prediction of how long a complete playback installation will last and is not an uptime guarantee for the board, power supply, storage, display, software, and network together.
Choose the approach that matches the job
| Approach | Best suited to | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local file in VLC or a video-looper setup | Fixed content that should repeat | Aligns with the Pi’s documented H.264 decode capability and can play without fetching video over the network. | File encoding and software configuration still matter; test the exact media. It is not the same as viewing YouTube online. |
| YouTube in a browser | Content must come directly from YouTube | Plays the current online video without first setting up a local file loop. | Depends on current browser behavior, stream codec, network, and acceleration. No reliable resolution is established for all Pi 3 B+ setups. |
| A newer dedicated media player | Signage where downtime has significant consequences | Depending on the selected model, it may offer more headroom or product support. | Compare tested codec and resolution support, recovery, updates, warranty, power, and cost; no specific alternative model is assessed here. |
Troubleshoot common playback problems
The local video stutters or drops frames
Check the file’s codec and frame rate first; try an H.264 file at a lower resolution or frame rate, verify VLC hardware acceleration is being used, and test fullscreen playback. A 1080p30 decode specification does not guarantee smooth playback of every file.
YouTube plays poorly in the browser
Try a lower resolution and confirm network stability, but treat the result as specific to that browser, OS, stream, and Pi. Browser and stream-format changes can alter playback; a successful test on one video does not establish a universal limit or guarantee.

The Pi slows down after running for a while
Check board temperature, enclosure ventilation, the power supply and cable, and attached peripherals. At the documented 60°C soft limit, the Pi 3 B+ reduces clock speed; at 85°C, its cores and GPU are throttled back.
