Yes, if you mainly want a fixed gaming setup for supported PlayStation games; no, if you rely on laptop portability, PC titles, or general-purpose computing. A PS5 Pro and a gaming laptop serve different needs, and the available review description does not establish a controlled performance winner. The practical choice comes down to your games, full setup cost, display, and whether you need a computer away from the TV.
What the PS5 Pro offers—and what the headline doesn’t prove
The title refers to a Notebookcheck Reviews video listing reproduced by Ceppek on September 28, 2026. Its description says the reviewer tested the PS5 Pro for two months and discussed setup, ports, displays and HDR, selected games, competitive play, controller feel, physical versus digital games, subscriptions, and purchase value. The reported experience is useful context, but it is not a matched benchmark against a named gaming laptop. Ceppek’s listing does not provide enough detail to compare frame rates or image quality under identical game, resolution, and settings conditions.

Sony describes the PS5 Pro as a higher-performance version of its console, with more GPU compute units, faster memory, and features including ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning-based upscaling. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent results against PC hardware. Sony says the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the PS5 model it compared against, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering that is up to 45% faster. Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement also says Pro-enhanced features vary by supported game. A game must implement the relevant support to benefit; the figures should not be read as a guaranteed improvement in every title.

Wi-Fi 7 is available in territories that support the standard, and Sony lists VRR and 8K support. These are capability statements; actual game behavior and display compatibility depend on the title, territory, and connected equipment. Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said the system “provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates”—a promotional statement, not an independent test result.

When a PS5 Pro makes more sense
You want console-first gaming
If the games you intend to play are available for PlayStation and you prefer a console-centered setup, the PS5 Pro can be the more natural fit. You buy a defined console package rather than choosing laptop components, managing PC game settings, and deciding whether a particular laptop configuration meets your needs. The reviewer listing attributes ease of setup and quiet operation to the reviewer’s experience; those observations should be treated as subjective and specific to that review, not as guarantees for every room or unit.
You want to play on a fixed display
The Pro is designed to connect to a display rather than travel as an all-in-one computer. Sony’s setup guide gives its dimensions as approximately 388 × 89 × 216 mm (width × height × depth) and its weight as about 3.1 kg. Its ports include one front USB-C SuperSpeed 10Gbps port, one front USB-C High-Speed port, two rear USB-A SuperSpeed 10Gbps ports, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. See Sony’s PS5 Pro setup guide for connection and placement details.
You value the included controller and console format
Sony’s launch announcement says the PS5 Pro includes a DualSense controller and a 2TB SSD. If you already have a suitable TV or monitor, those inclusions help define what comes in the box, though they do not by themselves settle the value comparison with a laptop. The controller experience is personal: the review listing says it was discussed, but does not establish that every player will prefer it to a mouse and keyboard or a different controller.

When a gaming laptop is the better fit
You need portability or work capability
A gaming laptop can travel with you and handle general computing as well as games. If you need one device for work, study, travel, and PC gaming, a console cannot replace those laptop functions. Conversely, a laptop only substitutes for a console if its specific hardware, display, and game support match what you want; “gaming laptop” is a broad category, not one performance level.
Your priority is PC game access or controls
Choose around the titles and services you actually use. A PS5 Pro is not a route to a PC-only game library, and a laptop does not automatically provide the same PlayStation game access or living-room experience. Competitive play also depends on the game, input method, display, and your preferences. The video listing says competitive gaming was covered but supplies no measured latency or controlled comparison, so it cannot establish a universal advantage for either platform.
Compare the complete cost, not just the console price
Sony’s recommended retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $899.99 in the United States, £789.99 in the United Kingdom, €899.99 in Europe, and ¥137,980 in Japan. These are Sony’s stated MSRP figures, not a guarantee of current retailer pricing. Use the relevant local figure and check the offer available where you live. Sony’s March 27, 2026 price update supersedes the lower launch prices announced in 2024.

- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.

The console price is only one part of the decision. Include the cost of any display you still need, games, and any subscription you choose. The disc drive is sold separately, so add it if you want physical-media playback. A laptop comparison likewise needs the price of the actual laptop configuration and any peripherals or display you plan to buy. The available sources do not provide a complete cost comparison or subscription prices, so a single all-in winner cannot be calculated from them.

The PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive. Sony says its separately purchased PS5 Disc Drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD discs. If you own physical games or want movie-disc playback, account for the separate accessory and confirm compatibility before buying. If you buy digitally, the drive is not required for that purpose. The reviewer listing says the video discussed physical and digital games, but it does not establish a price advantage for either format.
Display and HDR depend on your setup
A console’s output is only part of what you see: the display, connection, game, and selected mode all matter. The video listing says the reviewer discussed multiple TVs and monitors and HDR, but it does not identify a universally best model or configuration. Sony’s stated VRR and 8K support are features, not a promise that every game renders at 8K or that every display will use every feature. Check the display’s supported inputs and capabilities against the console and the games you play, and use the game’s available graphics and frame-rate options to choose your preferred balance.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Pick the PS5 Pro if your main goal is supported PlayStation gaming in a fixed setup and you do not need the device to function as a portable computer.
- Pick a gaming laptop if portability, PC-only games, work, or study are essential—not optional extras.
- Price the whole setup, including display needs, games, optional disc drive, and any subscription or laptop accessories relevant to your use.
- Check game-specific support before paying extra for Pro features; enhancements vary by title.
- For a performance comparison, look for tests using the exact laptop CPU and GPU, the same game and settings, the same resolution and frame-rate mode, and comparable test dates. The cited review listing does not supply those matched results.
