No documented PS5 emulator workflow in the official sources reviewed here plays retail PS5 games. The commonly confused project, shadPS4, emulates PS4 software on Windows, Linux, and macOS—not PS5 games. Its documented workflow uses files dumped from your own PS4 copy, rather than a retail disc inserted into a computer.
Can a PS5 emulator play retail games?
For shadPS4, no: it is a PS4 emulator, and its documentation covers PS4 game dumps and selected PS4 system modules. It does not document PS5 game support or retail PS5 game files. The project describes itself as early in development; its Quick Start warns that many games do not work and that games that do run may have emulation issues. Check the official shadPS4 project for its current status and compatibility information.

A retail disc is not the documented PC setup. The shadPS4 Quick Start describes dumping a game and installing its files in the emulator’s game directory or adding a game path. It does not establish that shadPS4 can read retail discs directly. The sources here likewise do not establish retail PS5 game playback through another emulator, so a broader claim about every project would be unwarranted.

The guide describes a PS4 game dump made from your own copy as the base input. Updates, DLC, and certain compatibility files are separate and may be optional; they are not a universal bundle required for every game.

- Base game: A dump from your own PS4 copy, placed in the game installation directory or made available through an added game path. The guide uses a folder named with the game’s CUSA serial, in the form
CUSAxxxxx. - Game update (optional): A separately dumped update in a folder named
CUSAxxxxx-patch, copied to the game installation directory as described in the guide. - DLC (optional): Separately dumped additional content placed in the additional-content directory, in a folder matching the game folder.
- PS4 firmware modules (compatibility files): Some supported modules may help when shadPS4 has not reimplemented a function. The guide describes dumping decrypted files from a PS4 and placing supported modules in shadPS4’s
sys_modulesfolder. The project says supported modules must come from a legally owned PS4. This is not a complete PS5 firmware image, nor documentation of PS5 support. - Trophy key and fonts (optional): The Quick Start gives separate steps for trophy support and for fonts that can help games that require them. It does not describe these as universal game-boot requirements.
The guide cautions that games, updates, and DLC are copyrighted and directs users to dump their own copy. It does not support obtaining game or firmware files from unauthorized download sources.
How is playing a PS4 retail disc on a PS5 different?
If the goal is to play a PS4 disc, a PS5 console is a separate, supported option for many titles. Sony says the overwhelming majority of its 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, while noting exceptions and possible errors or missing functionality. These are Sony’s figures and guidance from a support page with no publication date shown.

For disc playback, the PS4 disc must stay inserted while you play, and the PS5 must have a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. See Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance for the current details.

What should you check before setting up shadPS4?
- Confirm the game is a PS4 title. shadPS4 targets PS4 software, not PS5 retail games.
- Use the current official Quick Start. Follow its game-dump, folder naming, and game-path instructions; project details can change.
- Keep optional files separate. Install an update, DLC, or supported system module only as applicable to the game and the guide’s instructions.
- Check compatibility expectations. The project warns that many games do not work and that working games can still have emulation issues.
