What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No: Nintendo DS Game Cards do not work on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED. Those systems lack backward compatibility with earlier Nintendo platforms. Nintendo Switch Online also does not currently list a Nintendo DS game library.
Will a DS cartridge work in a Switch?
No. A Nintendo DS Game Card cannot be inserted into a Switch and played. Nintendo says older physical and digital games do not carry over or run on Switch, and the Switch family does not include backward compatibility with previous Nintendo platforms. Nintendo’s compatibility information explains the limitation.

This applies to the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. A DS stylus, accessory, or other add-on does not change the console’s compatibility; Nintendo documents the DS Lite as separate hardware with its own Game Card slot.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include DS games?
Not at present. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ lists NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Mega Drive libraries, plus GameCube on Switch 2. It does not list Nintendo DS. The service’s lineup can change, so check the current FAQ for updates.

A Switch Online subscription is therefore not a way to play a DS cartridge, and there is no DS library currently listed as part of the service.
Has Nintendo announced DS games for Switch 2?
No specific DS or 3DS software plans have been announced. In Nintendo’s English translation of its shareholder Q&A dated June 26, 2026, Nintendo President and Representative Director Shuntaro Furukawa said: “At this time, there is nothing specific we can share about Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS software.” He also said Nintendo is working to make games it released in the past playable on current hardware and will continue exploring possibilities. That general statement is not a confirmation of a DS release, a schedule, or a future service library. Read Nintendo’s June 26, 2026 shareholder Q&A.

How can you play original DS Game Cards?
Use compatible DS hardware. For example, the Nintendo DS Lite has a dedicated slot for Nintendo DS Game Cards, as shown in Nintendo’s DS Lite operations manual. This is a separate-console option, not an attachment or upgrade for a Switch.

If buying a used DS Lite, check the condition of the system and cartridge slot, and confirm whether a charger and stylus are included. Having a DS system is the relevant route for playing DS cartridges; buying one does not make those cartridges playable on Switch.

Which option fits what you want to play?
| Your goal | What to use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play an original DS Game Card | Compatible DS hardware, such as a DS Lite | The DS system has a DS Game Card slot; the cartridge will not run on Switch. |
| Play games on your Switch | Switch software or classic libraries currently listed for Nintendo Switch Online | The currently listed classic libraries do not include Nintendo DS. |
| Play a particular DS-era game on Switch | Check whether that title has a separately sold Switch version | A port or remake is a distinct Switch release, not compatibility with the DS cartridge. Verify the specific title individually. |
Bottom line on DS games and Switch
Your DS cartridges will not play on Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch Online does not currently list a DS library. For original DS Game Cards, use separate compatible DS hardware. Nintendo’s June 2026 statement leaves future DS support on Switch 2 unannounced.
