Can a Mini PC Replace Six Paid Apps? What This Self-Hosted Setup Actually Saved

A mini PC can run several useful self-hosted apps, but the account behind the “$50 mini PC” headline says it replaced five subscriptions and one paid app—not six subscriptions. The author ran six alternatives on a computer they already owned; the article does not establish that they bought it for $50.

What the setup replaced—and what it did not

Watch Article With Love described running six browser-accessible apps on Ubuntu Server: Actual Budget, Stirling PDF, Karakeep, Shlink, ntfy, and Easy!Appointments. The closing account says five subscriptions were cancelled and one paid app was replaced. Those are the author’s reported outcomes, not an independently verified savings calculation. The source compares the apps with YNAB, Adobe Acrobat, Readwise Reader, Bitly, Pushover, and Calendly, respectively. That is a set of task-level alternatives, not proof that each self-hosted app matches every feature of its paid counterpart.

Self-hosted app Compared with What the account says Important qualification
Actual Budget YNAB Used for category budgeting and reports. Bank syncing was not needed. Connecting banks through SimpleFIN costs extra.
Stirling PDF Adobe Acrobat Used for merging, compression, OCR, and redaction. The author says it covered their workflow, not every Acrobat feature.
Karakeep Readwise Reader Used to save and search reference links. The author did not claim like-for-like feature parity.
Shlink Bitly Used to create short URLs. Public access required a domain, Cloudflare Tunnel, and additional configuration.
ntfy Pushover Used for self-hosted notifications. The account notes Pushover’s personal license is a one-time $5 purchase, so this was not a straightforward subscription replacement.
Easy!Appointments Calendly Used to provide a booking page. The source does not quantify feature differences or net savings.

The specific details above are the source author’s descriptions of their own use. Actual Budget, Stirling PDF, Karakeep, Shlink, ntfy, and Easy!Appointments.

What hardware it ran on

The author reported a Celeron J3455 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 120 GB SSD. The article describes this as an already-owned mini PC; it provides no purchase receipt or other evidence that the machine cost $50. Treat “$50” as headline framing, not a current price or a demonstrated hardware deal. Watch Article With Love (2026)

With all six applications running, the author reported about 2.4 GB of RAM in use, 1.0 GB available, and 241 MB of swap in use. They also said usage was light and they did not stress-test the system. These figures describe that setup under light use; they are not a performance benchmark or a guarantee that the same hardware will suit another workload.

A mini PC is one possible host for self-managed services, but compatibility and performance depend on the software and the specific machine. For example, Jellyfin’s current guidance requires SSE4.1 support on x86 CPUs starting with Jellyfin 10.11 and warns that many single-board computers are too slow for acceptable media service. Jellyfin was not part of this six-app setup, so that guidance is a reminder to check the requirements of the software you actually plan to run—not evidence about this stack. What “free” leaves you responsible for

Self-hosted software may avoid an app subscription, but running it moves work and some costs to you. The source account identifies updates, backups, and access as continuing responsibilities. It does not total electricity, extra storage, replacement hardware, domain fees, backup media, or the value of the time spent maintaining the server, so it does not establish net savings.

BOSGAME E5 11 Pro Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5300U 4C/ 8T, Business Home Office PC
  • 【AMD Ryzen 3 5300U CPU: Outperforms N150 & 3500U】 BOSGAME E5 mini PC is powered by the TSMC 7nm FinFET architecture AMD Ryzen 3 5300U processor (4 Cores, 8 Threads, up to 3.8GHz boost, 6MB total cache). Compared to low-end Intel N150 or 3500U chips which only have 4 single threads and throttle under load, the 5300U delivers over 30% faster multi-core speed. Run 30+ browser tabs, large Excel sheets, and Zoom meetings simultaneously without system lag.
  • 【8GB DDR4 RAM & 256GB NVMe SSD Storage】 Installed with high-speed 8GB DDR4 dual-channel memory and a fast 256GB M.2 2280 SSD, eliminating slow boot times and application loading delays. To accommodate growing data requirements, the upgradeable hardware design features dual SODIMM slots that allow you to expand memory up to 64GB RAM, ensuring smooth operation during heavy multitasking.
  • 【High-Capacity Dual M.2 SSD Storage Expansion】 Never worry about running out of space for your business files. In addition to the pre-installed 256GB system drive, the motherboard houses an extra empty internal M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot. This allows you to easily add a second solid-state drive for up to an additional 2TB of storage capacity (upgrades not included) without needing to remove or reinstall the original operating system.
  • 【Radeon 6-Core Graphics & Triple 4K Displays】 Integrated with official AMD Radeon Graphics (6 Graphics Cores, 1500 MHz frequency) for casual gaming, photo editing, and crisp 4K media decoding. Featuring 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort, and 1x Full-Function Type-C port, the E5 outputs true 4K@60Hz resolution to three monitors at once. This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Remote or public access can add setup and dependencies. Shlink, for instance, needed a domain, Cloudflare Tunnel, and additional configuration in the author’s account. Home Assistant likewise describes its cloud service as optional for features such as remote access and selected integrations; its documentation notes that container installations leave the operator responsible for the underlying system and updates. How to decide whether this approach fits you

  1. Start with the task, not the app name. List the specific jobs you need—such as budgeting categories, PDF redaction, saving links, or booking appointments—and check that the alternative handles them. The account itself reports feature limits for Stirling PDF and Karakeep.
  2. Count costs that remain. Include services you still need, such as Actual Budget’s optional SimpleFIN bank connection, plus any domain, tunnel, storage, or backup expenses relevant to your setup. The source does not provide a complete cost total.
  3. Check the exact hardware and software requirements. Do not assume that a low-cost or older machine can run every service. Verify processor capabilities, supported installation method, memory needs, and any workload-specific requirements before buying or migrating.
  4. Decide who will maintain it. Plan how you will install updates, make and test backups, and restore service if the machine or storage fails. If you do not want those responsibilities, a hosted service may be worth its recurring fee.
  5. Separate private use from public access. A service used only on your home network has different access needs from one exposed to the internet. Identify the domain, tunnel, security, and configuration requirements before treating a locally running app as a ready-to-use public service.
