Sometimes—but don’t assume a microwave can go in your regular garbage bin. Whether it is accepted depends on your city, county, and waste hauler. Check their current instructions before putting it out; they may require a bulky-item pickup, drop-off, or recycling route instead.
Why there isn’t one nationwide yes-or-no answer
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says municipal solid waste landfills can receive household appliances, but that does not mean every local collection service accepts a microwave in an ordinary bin. States oversee landfills and may set stricter requirements, while municipalities and haulers determine their collection arrangements.

EPA’s appliance-disposal guidance describes options such as scheduled bulky-item collection and delivery to a transfer station or landfill. Those are examples to ask about, not services available everywhere. The guidance’s detailed environmental instructions focus on refrigerated appliances; it does not establish a microwave-specific hazardous-material rule.

- Check the official local source. Search your city, county, or waste hauler’s website for “microwave disposal,” “appliance bulky item,” or “appliance recycling.” If the instructions are unclear, call the waste authority.
- Ask whether regular garbage collection accepts a whole microwave. Confirm any size, container, or set-out rules before placing it at the curb or in a bin.
- If regular collection won’t take it, ask about alternatives. Check whether the area offers scheduled bulky-item pickup, a resident drop-off at a transfer station or landfill, or appliance recycling.
- Confirm the details before transporting or setting it out. Ask whether an appointment is required, where and when the unit can be delivered or collected, whether there is a fee, whether the service accepts a whole microwave, and whether the unit needs preparation.
Which disposal option should you ask about?
| Route | What to confirm locally |
|---|---|
| Regular garbage or curbside collection | Whether the hauler accepts a microwave and any size or set-out rules. |
| Bulky-item collection | Whether you need an appointment, the pickup date, and any fee. |
| Transfer station or landfill | Whether it accepts microwaves from residents, plus any preparation requirements or charges. |
| Appliance or electronics recycler | Whether it accepts a whole microwave, rather than only small electronics or scrap metal. |
| Retailer take-back | Whether removal of the old unit is offered with your replacement purchase in your location. |
Does microwave recycling exist?
It may be available locally, but acceptance varies. EPA’s recycling guidance identifies metals recovered from appliances as a recycling material category and advises residents to confirm what their community accepts. That does not establish that a particular recycler takes whole microwaves. Ask the local waste authority or recycler directly before making a trip.

Does a microwave need special preparation?
The EPA appliance guidance reviewed for this topic discusses refrigerants in refrigerated appliances and mercury in some larger appliances; it does not establish a microwave-specific handling requirement. Follow any preparation directions from your local authority, hauler, or recycler rather than assuming a particular step is required.
