The model can still generate its answer on your computer, but web search needs a network connection to the service providing results. Without that connection, a prepared local model can answer from its learned weights and local files, not newly published web pages.
What “local AI with web search” actually means
Local inference and live web access are separate capabilities. A local model generates text using model files on your machine; to answer using current web material, its surrounding application must send a query to a search service, retrieve results or pages, and provide that material to the model as context.

For example, Ollama documents tools for web search and fetching pages. Its web-search API requires an account API key, so the model can run locally while the search request depends on an external service and an internet connection. Ollama’s web-search documentation describes the feature.

Search results and browser automation are different
Search typically returns results for a query; browsing can involve opening pages and navigating or interacting with them. An assistant’s ability to do one does not establish that it can do the other.

Open WebUI documents DuckDuckGo, hosted providers that require API keys, and SearXNG, which requires the base URL of an instance. It documents browser automation separately: the feature is off by default and can use a local browser through Chrome DevTools Protocol or a cloud browser service. The provider and browser choice therefore affect what network services are involved. See Open WebUI’s documentation for its search and browser options.
What works online
With internet access and a configured provider, a local assistant can combine local inference with web results. Depending on the setup, search may require an account key, a reachable self-hosted search instance, or no additional configuration. Retrieved material is passed to the model to help form its response; the model’s local location does not make the search provider local.

- Compact, Connected Design: Includes a 2TB M.2 SSD, 10GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity, and HDMI 2.1b.
That distinction matters when considering data flow: a search query must reach the selected search service, and browser automation may involve either a local browser or a cloud service. The cited product documentation describes available integrations, but it does not establish a universal privacy guarantee for every configuration.
What works offline
After setup, a local model can generate answers without internet access from its learned weights. It can also work with local documents when the model files and the services and dependencies needed for document processing are already available on the machine.

LM Studio says downloaded models can run offline, local document chat stays on the machine, and its local inference server does not require internet access. Its offline-operation documentation also notes that model discovery, model and runtime downloads, and update checks need a network connection. Download required files before disconnecting.
Open WebUI’s community-contributed offline guide adds that a local inference server alone may not be enough for document workflows. Prepare the model, embeddings, document extraction dependencies, and other required services in advance. Offline inference can use what is present locally; it cannot retrieve live web pages when the search service is unreachable.

How to choose a setup
| Setup question | What to check | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Does it offer live search? | Check whether the application exposes web search and identify its provider. | Local inference by itself does not provide current web results. |
| What does the provider require? | Determine whether it needs an account key, a reachable SearXNG instance, or no extra configuration. | Hosted providers need network access; a self-hosted instance must also be reachable. |
| Do you need page navigation? | Check whether the feature retrieves search results or controls a browser, and whether that browser is local or cloud-hosted. | Browser automation is distinct from search and can introduce additional service dependencies. |
| Must the setup work offline? | Confirm model files, embeddings, document extraction dependencies, runtimes, caches, and any required services are available locally. | Preparation is needed before disconnection; model files alone may not cover document workflows. |
| Must it be isolated from the network? | Check firewall, container, or physical network controls rather than relying only on application settings. | Application-level offline settings do not guarantee that outbound traffic is blocked. |
Offline mode is not network isolation
Open WebUI’s offline guide explicitly warns that its settings do not block outbound connections. External APIs and other configured services may still make requests if the network permits them. For a strictly isolated machine, restrict network access with controls outside the application and verify the setup on the actual target machine. Do not treat a local interface or an OFFLINE_MODE setting as a firewall.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The documented options show that local inference can be paired with network-based search, and that offline inference is possible after preparation. They do not provide comparable benchmarks for answer quality, latency, or hardware requirements across these configurations. Performance and hardware needs depend on the specific model and machine; the cited materials do not establish a universal threshold or show that one arrangement is faster, more capable, or more private than another.
