Amazon says audio and video content is unsupported on Kindle E-readers, and its publishing guidance says streaming video is not supported for Kindle Edition media. A report describes an unofficial experiment involving a jailbroken Kindle 4 and KOReader, but that is not a supported feature or a reliable method for other Kindles.
What Amazon supports on Kindle e-readers
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) guidance says audio and video content in Kindle editions is not supported on Kindle E-reader devices. Customers can read the book, but embedded audio or video is replaced by a message that the content is unsupported on that device. KDP also states: “Streaming video is not supported at this time. Use embedded video instead.” Amazon KDP’s audio and video guidance distinguishes Kindle E-readers from devices that can play supported Kindle-edition media.

That distinction matters: “Kindle” is sometimes used casually for both an E Ink e-reader and an Amazon Fire tablet. Amazon’s guidance lists Fire tablets (2nd generation and later), iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch as devices that support audio and video in reflowable Kindle editions. This refers to embedded media in eligible books; it is not a list of devices guaranteed to work with every video-streaming service.
Why the experimental browser is not a streaming solution
Some older Kindle models have an experimental web browser, but that does not make them equivalent to a modern tablet browser or streaming app. Amazon’s older Kindle user guide says the experimental browser “does not support media plug-ins.” Amazon’s Kindle User Guide therefore offers no basis for expecting ordinary web video to play.

What the reported Kindle 4 workaround actually shows
A How-To Geek report republished by Yahoo Tech describes an unusual experiment in which a decade-old Kindle 4 was jailbroken and used with KOReader to do more than ordinary reading. The report notes that the E Ink screen cannot refresh fast enough for a movie at 24 frames per second. The Yahoo Tech report is evidence of a reported unofficial experiment—not an Amazon-supported capability, a reproducible guide, or proof that other models can do the same.
The available account does not establish the precise Kindle 4 variant, firmware, jailbreak procedure, KOReader version, or whether the result can be reproduced. There is no dependable model-and-firmware compatibility list here, so it would be misleading to give universal modification steps or suggest that the workaround will work on a Kindle you own.

Why E Ink is a poor fit for watching video
Kindle e-readers use electronic-paper displays designed primarily for reading. Amazon’s Scribe guide describes the screen and its refresh behavior in that context. Amazon’s Kindle Scribe user guide does not establish video support. Motion demands frequent screen updates, and the reported experiment highlights the gap between E Ink refresh behavior and the 24-fps reference for movie playback. That figure is not a measured Kindle performance benchmark.

What to use if you want to watch video
- For ordinary video streaming: use a tablet or another device with a supported streaming app or browser. A Kindle E-reader is not the appropriate device for this job.
- For media embedded in a Kindle book: check that the book’s audio or video is supported on your device. Amazon’s KDP guidance distinguishes E-readers from Fire tablets and certain Apple devices for this specific type of content.
- For an older Kindle experiment: treat jailbreaking and KOReader as an unofficial, model-specific report, not a dependable viewing option or a reason to buy a particular Kindle.
