Hetzner’s CAX cloud servers use Ampere Altra ARM64 processors, and FFmpeg can run on them if you install an AArch64-compatible build and its compatible libraries. The harder question is whether a particular CAX size can encode your exact video in real time, continuously. Hetzner and YouTube do not publish a CAX-specific FFmpeg benchmark or a guarantee of 24/7 encoding capacity, so test your intended command and workload before relying on it.
What works on Hetzner ARM—and what still needs testing
Hetzner identifies its CAX servers as Ampere Altra ARM64 systems. That makes native ARM64 software a fit in principle, but the operating system, FFmpeg binary, libraries, and any container images must match the server’s architecture. Hetzner’s cloud-server FAQ likewise says an Arm64 server needs an Arm64-compatible ISO: Hetzner cloud server FAQ.

Do not copy the FFmpeg download example from Hetzner’s software guide onto a CAX server without checking it: the example is an amd64 build, not an ARM64 build. Use an appropriate ARM64 package or build and verify the installed binary’s architecture before use. See Hetzner’s FFmpeg installation guide.

Choose the YouTube output settings first
Set the output profile before choosing a server. YouTube’s encoder guidance is ingest advice; it does not establish that any Hetzner instance can produce that feed. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and allows up to 60 fps. For H.264, its listed recommended bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. Choose from the full table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Transport: Use RTMPS if the selected FFmpeg build supports it and your stream configuration permits it.
- Audio: Use a supported audio codec such as AAC and test it with the video, rather than assuming a silent video-only test proves the full stream works.
How to validate FFmpeg on a CAX server
- Confirm the machine architecture. Check that the VM and installed operating system report AArch64/ARM64. Select an ARM64-compatible image when creating the server; do not assume an amd64 image or binary will run natively.
- Install a matching FFmpeg build. Use an ARM64 package from your operating system’s repositories or build FFmpeg and its required libraries for ARM64. Verify the resulting executable’s architecture and that the required encoders and protocols are present. The Hetzner example linked above is amd64, so it is not an install command for CAX.
- Configure the YouTube output profile. Set the target resolution and frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, two-second keyframes, audio, and RTMPS endpoint as supported by your build. Keep the stream key private; configure it as a secret rather than placing it in public logs or shared command history.
- Run the exact intended workload for an extended test. Use the same source, output profile, preset, filters, and audio you plan to run continuously. Confirm frames are encoded at least as quickly as they are consumed, with CPU headroom; watch for growing lag, dropped frames, thermal or resource pressure, and memory or storage exhaustion. Repeat on the CAX size and region you intend to use. No reviewed official source establishes which CAX tier passes a particular FFmpeg workload.
- Test the whole YouTube path before depending on it. YouTube advises testing before going live with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages. Validate that the stream reaches the intended YouTube live event and that viewers receive the expected picture and sound. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Make a 24/7 process recoverable
A successful test does not make an encoder self-healing. For a continuous setup, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd or an equivalent service manager, configure a restart policy, and keep logs that let you distinguish encoder failures from network or YouTube ingest failures. Add alerts or checks for process state, CPU and memory use, disk space, and YouTube stream health. These are operational measures you configure; they are not a Hetzner guarantee.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
- “Exec format error” or FFmpeg will not launch: The binary is likely built for the wrong architecture. Replace an amd64 executable with an AArch64/ARM64 build and check dependent libraries.
- The stream falls behind or drops frames: The workload may exceed available CPU at that moment, especially on shared-vCPU compute. Reduce encoding complexity or output demands, then repeat the sustained test; do not assume a larger listed vCPU count alone proves adequate performance.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check bitrate, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, network stability, and YouTube’s reported messages. Confirm the chosen codec and ingest configuration match the platform guidance.
- The stream works briefly but does not recover after a disconnect: Inspect FFmpeg’s exit behavior and logs, then test supervisor restart and reconnect handling. Add monitoring so a failed restart does not leave the channel offline unnoticed.
- Video arrives without usable sound: Check the input’s audio stream, selected audio codec, and output mapping; test with representative audio before relying on the continuous feed.
When a cloud encoder service is simpler
If you want to loop uploaded videos without maintaining an ARM server and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo is an alternative for uploaded-video loops, not a camera encoder or a way to test whether your CAX FFmpeg command can sustain a stream. If the DIY server is the goal, validate it as described above. If you prefer not to maintain the machine, start a StreamNeo free day.
