Neither makes every Pixel a drop-in Raspberry Pi replacement. The reported setup behind this title was Debian GNU/Linux 13 trixie on aarch64 with 7.39 GiB of memory, according to a September 18, 2026 search-result preview; the original article’s setup details could not be independently checked. What “Pixel as a Linux PC” can mean
There are two distinct routes, and they solve different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Android Desktop Mode presents Android apps in a desktop-style interface on an external monitor. It is not itself a Linux desktop.
- Termux and related tools can provide a Linux userspace. With a graphical display stack such as Termux:X11, that environment can run a Linux desktop; PRoot can provide a separate distribution userspace.
A Pixel may therefore substitute for a small computer for some portable tasks, but “Linux” does not mean the same thing in both setups. The reported Debian 13 configuration does not establish which route its author used, so it should be treated as that author’s setup rather than a universal Pixel configuration.
Can your Pixel connect to an external monitor?
Check the exact phone model before buying cables or a hub. Plugable’s guide says Pixel 8 series and newer models that include USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode can output video; older Pixels without that capability cannot. A hub cannot add video output to a phone that lacks it. Plugable’s compatibility and setup guide

Android Desktop Mode also depends on the Android build and settings. Plugable’s guide, updated August 12, 2026, describes the connected-display desktop feature on Android 16 QPR1 Beta or newer builds and enabling Desktop Experience in Developer Options. Android Authority reported on March 3, 2026 that the feature arrived with the March Pixel Drop for Pixel 8 and newer phones with USB DisplayPort. Rollout and labels may change, so check the installed build and current device settings rather than assuming the feature is available on every Pixel. Android Authority’s report
Match the display connection
- For a USB-C monitor, use a compatible DisplayPort connection path.
- For an HDMI monitor, use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
- For wired keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, storage, or charging, choose a hub that supports the required data and power features as well as video.
- Wireless keyboard and mouse can avoid using hub ports, if preferred.
Google does not publish a detailed Pixel resolution and refresh-rate compatibility matrix, Plugable says. Resolution, refresh rate, scaling, and stability depend on the phone, Android build, monitor, cable, adapter, and full connection path.

What Android Desktop Mode does—and does not do
Desktop Mode gives Android apps a desktop-style arrangement on a larger screen. It can be useful when the work you need is already handled by Android apps, and when you want to use the phone with a monitor and external input devices. It does not turn those apps into Linux applications or provide a general-purpose Linux distribution by itself.

How the Linux-userspace route differs
The DroidDesk project documents a community setup using Termux, Termux:X11, the Termux User Repository, and optionally PRoot for Ubuntu, Debian, or Kali userspaces. In broad terms, Termux supplies the Android-side terminal environment, PRoot can provide a separate distribution userspace, and Termux:X11 supplies a route for displaying a graphical desktop. These are not the same feature as Android Desktop Mode, and project instructions and app compatibility can change. DroidDesk project repository
The repository recommends obtaining Termux from F-Droid rather than the Play Store and describes its own installation procedure. Follow current upstream guidance for the tools before installing anything; the project’s statement that its setup has been tested is the project’s claim, not an independent benchmark or compatibility guarantee. The exact-title article’s preview does not say whether its Debian 13 environment used Termux, Android’s Linux Terminal virtual machine, or another approach.

Where a Pixel can—and cannot—stand in for a Pi
| Need | Pixel setup | Raspberry Pi consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Portable computing with a built-in screen, battery, and cellular connection | These are already part of the phone; external-display desktop use still needs a supported video path and usually a monitor and peripherals. | The cited material does not establish a direct comparison of portability or performance. |
| Android apps on a monitor | Android Desktop Mode offers a desktop-style interface on supported configurations. | Not established as a directly comparable use in the cited material. |
| Linux desktop applications | Possible through a Linux userspace and graphical stack such as the community Termux/X11 route; setup and compatibility vary. | The cited material provides no controlled comparison of application compatibility or speed. |
| GPIO or direct hardware interfaces | The cited material does not establish Pixel support as a Pi substitute for these tasks. | Do not assume a Pixel replaces Pi-specific hardware interfaces. |
| Unattended server operation | The cited material does not establish that a Pixel is a substitute for a Pi server. | Choose based on the actual workload and operating requirements; no head-to-head evidence is provided. |
The comparison is about fit, not a proven speed or value ranking: the available sources contain no controlled benchmark between Pixel and Raspberry Pi models.

Troubleshoot a black or unreliable display
- Verify the phone. Confirm the exact Pixel supports USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode; an unsupported model cannot be fixed by adding a hub.
- Check software and settings. Confirm the installed Android build supports connected-display desktop features and enable Desktop Experience in Developer Options where the build requires it.
- Check the whole video path. Verify the monitor input, cable, adapter, and hub support the needed DisplayPort path. A charge-only cable will not carry video.
- Reduce variables. If possible, test a known compatible display connection without extra peripherals, then add the hub and devices back one at a time.
- Expect configuration differences. Resolution, refresh rate, scaling, or stability can vary across the complete setup; Google does not publish the detailed compatibility matrix Plugable says would settle exact combinations.
So, did the Pixel replace the Raspberry Pi?
It can be a practical portable alternative when the goal is phone-based computing on the go, Android apps on a monitor, or experimenting with a Linux userspace—and the exact phone and connection path support the needed features. The headline’s reported Debian configuration is evidence of one attributed setup, not proof that every Pixel runs Debian the same way or replaces a Pi for GPIO, direct hardware access, or unattended server workloads.
