No evidence in Amazon’s support guidance shows that a Fire TV Stick’s HDMI-CEC conflicts physically damage an old TV. CEC problems are control or compatibility issues: power and volume functions may not work as expected if the TV does not support the needed CEC features. Amazon notes that TV support varies; it does not identify an age cutoff.
What an HDMI-CEC conflict can—and cannot—mean
HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices send control commands over HDMI. Amazon says a Fire TV Stick can use CEC to control compatible equipment, such as turning devices on or adjusting volume. That depends on the TV and any other connected equipment supporting the relevant functions. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick guide describes the intended controls, while its Fire TV app troubleshooting guidance cautions that not all TVs support the CEC protocol needed for certain power and volume controls.

If a power or volume command fails, or a connected device responds unexpectedly, that points to a control or compatibility problem—not, by itself, physical damage. The official guidance addressed here covers settings and connection troubleshooting; it does not report CEC conflicts damaging TV hardware. This does not prove that hardware damage is impossible or diagnose an individual television. It means the available guidance does not establish CEC as a cause of such damage.

- Check the TV’s documentation or settings. Look for whether the TV supports HDMI-CEC and the particular function that is failing. Manufacturers may use different names for CEC, and Amazon’s guidance does not provide a complete list of those names. Do not assume that every older TV supports every CEC feature.
- Confirm the selected input. Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input where the Fire TV Stick is connected. A wrong input can look like a device or screen problem. Amazon’s setup directions include selecting the matching input.
- Toggle Fire TV’s CEC setting. Go to Settings > Display & Audio > HDMI-CEC Device Control and switch it off, then on. Amazon lists this step for a blank or unresponsive screen; it is a troubleshooting action, not proof that CEC caused the symptom. Amazon’s blank-screen steps provide this setting path.
- Reseat the HDMI connection. Disconnect and reconnect the Stick. If your setup includes an HDMI cable or hub, Amazon suggests trying a replacement when troubleshooting a blank screen.
- Restart the device and check its power. Restart the Fire TV Stick and use the supplied power adapter. Amazon’s setup guidance says to connect the power cable to the included adapter and plug it into a wall outlet. Setup guidance and blank-screen troubleshooting cover these checks.
- Isolate any equipment between the Stick and TV. If an AV receiver or soundbar is in the HDMI path, check its selected input. You can temporarily connect the Stick directly to the TV to see whether the intermediate device is involved.
What to do if the controls still do not work
Check the manual for the exact TV model and confirm which CEC functions it supports. Then consult Amazon support for model-specific compatibility. There is no universal fix established by the cited guidance, and it does not support a rule that a TV becomes incompatible at a particular age.

If the TV still displays a picture and the only symptom is that power or volume control does not behave as expected, focus first on CEC support and configuration. If the screen is blank or the TV has other symptoms, work through the input, HDMI, and power checks rather than assuming a CEC conflict or concluding that the television is damaged.
