Yes, sometimes. A DigitalOcean Basic Droplet may keep a modest YouTube stream running if it only relays already-encoded video and has enough memory and outbound transfer. Basic uses shared CPU, so DigitalOcean does not guarantee predictable CPU access or certify a particular Droplet for uninterrupted streaming. If the Droplet must encode video in real time, consider dedicated CPU instead.
What decides whether Basic is enough?
The key distinction is whether your server is forwarding a video stream that has already been encoded or encoding video as it runs. Relaying usually asks less of the CPU; real-time encoding can be CPU-intensive. DigitalOcean describes Basic as shared CPU for low-to-medium-load applications with occasional brief bursts, and says the available CPU capacity can vary with neighboring Droplets. Its plan guidance describes live streaming and video encoding as CPU-Optimized use cases. DigitalOcean’s CPU plan guidance does not provide a benchmark that says a particular Basic size can handle a particular YouTube stream.

DigitalOcean lists the Basic family at 1–8 vCPUs and 1–32 GB memory. That range covers the family, not a promise that the smallest size can encode video or run your streaming software reliably. Choose a size based on the software and workload, then validate it under the conditions you plan to operate.

Practical decision rule
- Basic may be reasonable: you are relaying pre-encoded content, the selected plan has enough memory and transfer allowance, and a representative test shows stable CPU, memory, network use, and YouTube stream health.
- Consider dedicated CPU: the Droplet encodes in real time, CPU use remains high, dropped frames or stream-health problems persist, or variable CPU access is unacceptable. A CPU-Optimized Droplet offers dedicated CPU, but no source here establishes which size will suit a specific stream.
Neither option is a 24/7 uptime guarantee. The sources do not certify continuous-stream uptime for a Basic configuration.

Set bitrate and estimate outbound transfer
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Use the bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, then check that the Droplet’s included outbound transfer and any applicable overage pricing fit your use. DigitalOcean says transfer allowances vary by Droplet type and size; a network throughput ceiling is not the same as an included monthly transfer allowance.
| Planning item | Figure or guidance | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube H.264 bitrate, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; actual stream settings and content may differ. |
| YouTube H.264 bitrate, 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; actual stream settings and content may differ. |
| Bandwidth headroom | 20% above combined primary and backup bitrate | YouTube recommends leaving room for both feeds, if you send a backup. |
| Data at a continuous 5 Mbps | About 54 GB per 24 hours | Arithmetic estimate from bitrate × time, before protocol overhead; actual transfer can differ. |
| Maximum network throughput | 2 Gbps | DigitalOcean’s documented ceiling for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets—not an included monthly transfer figure or a guarantee of application throughput. |
For a rough monthly estimate, multiply the daily estimate by the number of days you expect to stream. Allow additional room for protocol overhead, a backup feed, reconnects, and other traffic. Confirm the exact Droplet’s included transfer allowance and pricing in DigitalOcean’s current configuration before launch.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder connections. Its bitrate, protocol, and bandwidth guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsValidate the Droplet before relying on it
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Check the current status in YouTube Studio before configuring a stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Choose the actual workload. Identify whether the Droplet will relay an already encoded stream or encode it in real time. Include the software, resolution, frame rate, primary bitrate, and any backup feed in your test.
- Check the plan’s transfer allowance. Look up the allowance and pricing for the specific Droplet size and type. Do not treat the documented network throughput maximum as monthly data included with the plan.
- Run a representative long-duration test. Stream the intended content and settings long enough to expose recurring CPU, memory, or connection problems. Watch Droplet resource use and YouTube’s stream health, not only whether the preview starts.
- Plan for interruption. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder or lost connection and restart it. A successful test is useful evidence for your workload, not a guarantee of future availability.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its guidance is operational advice; it does not certify the server or promise an uninterrupted stream.

Basic shared CPU or dedicated CPU?
| Factor | Basic shared CPU | Dedicated CPU, including CPU-Optimized |
|---|---|---|
| CPU access | Shared; access to full hyperthreads is not guaranteed and can depend on neighboring Droplet load. | Dedicated CPU provides more predictable access. |
| Workload fit | May suit a tested relay of pre-encoded video or lighter work. | DigitalOcean identifies live streaming and video encoding as CPU-Optimized uses; consider it for encode-heavy work. |
| Known stream capacity | No published capacity for a specific YouTube stream or Basic size. | No specific Basic-versus-CPU-Optimized benchmark for a given stream is established here. |
Choose based on the real workload and your tolerance for variable CPU availability, not just the number of vCPUs. If you move to dedicated CPU, test the same stream settings again; the plan category alone does not establish that every operational issue is solved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- Dropped frames or unstable stream health: check CPU load, available bandwidth, and whether the stream exceeds YouTube’s recommended bitrate. If encoding is pushing the CPU hard, test a dedicated-CPU plan.
- The stream starts but later stops: inspect encoder and connection logs, then verify that your restart or reconnect process works. YouTube recommends ongoing monitoring; a successful start does not prove the process will recover automatically.
- Transfer use is higher than expected: compare actual traffic with bitrate × stream duration, adding for protocol overhead, backup streams, and other Droplet traffic. Recheck the specific plan’s included transfer and pricing.
- A large network ceiling seems sufficient, but the stream still struggles: the 2 Gbps maximum documented for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets is a ceiling, not a promise of stable application throughput, CPU availability, or stream uptime.
- The channel cannot go live: check verification and whether YouTube has restricted live streaming on the channel during the previous 90 days.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to operate a server and streaming process, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service does not require a computer at home to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
