Yes—if you mean playing music while offline. A dedicated music player can handle a prepared local library, but it does not replace a smartphone for other tasks, and you may not need one just to listen offline: iPhone users can download Apple Music songs, albums, and playlists in advance. The choice comes down to where your music comes from, how much storage you need, your preferred headphones, and whether keeping music separate from phone use is worth carrying and charging another device.
What a dedicated music player changes—and what it does not
A dedicated digital audio player (DAP) is a separate device for music. It can play files transferred from a computer and, on some models, run music-service apps. That makes it a practical phone substitute for playback on a trip or away from a connection, provided the music you want is available offline on the player.

It does not make the phone obsolete: calls, messages, maps, and other phone functions remain on the phone. You also take on another device to carry and charge. The benefit is separation—useful if you want a substantial music library or fewer phone distractions while listening.

Choose based on where your offline music comes from
You already use a phone app
If your phone has enough storage and your music app supports downloads for your account, downloading before you leave is the simplest option. For Apple Music on iPhone, Apple’s guide explains how to download and manage songs, albums, and playlists: Download music from Apple Music to your iPhone.

You keep a local music library
A DAP is a more natural fit if you maintain music files on a computer and want a separate device for them. Sony’s NW-A306 guide describes transferring music from a computer and identifies internal Music/Download folders and a Music folder on a microSD card for files. See Sony’s file-transfer instructions.
You rely on subscription downloads
Check that the exact player supports your service and that the app allows downloads you can play offline. The NW-A306 runs Android 12 and has Wi-Fi, but those features do not guarantee that every service, app version, or account will work as you expect. Confirm compatibility and offline behavior before buying; service availability and software can change.

How much music fits on a player?
Do not assume all advertised storage is available for songs. Sony lists 32 GB of nominal memory for the NW-A306 but approximately 18 GB available for other content. It supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, so a compatible card can expand room for a local library. Check the exact model variant and documentation for your market before choosing storage.
The NW-A306 is one example, not a recommendation for every listener. Sony also lists a 3.6-inch display, USB-C, a stereo mini-jack, Bluetooth 5.0, and support for formats including MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, DSD, APE, and MQA. Consult the full specifications to check a format or connection you rely on.

Read battery figures as mode-specific estimates
Sony advertises up to 36 hours for 44.1 kHz FLAC playback, up to 32 hours for 96 kHz FLAC playback, and up to 26 hours with a music-service app on the NW-A306. Its specification page also gives approximately 26 hours for MP3 at 128 kbps in offline mode using another music app through the stereo mini-jack. These figures cover different conditions; they are not interchangeable measures or a direct comparison with a phone. Sony says, “Actual performance varies based on settings, environmental conditions, storage, and usage,” and notes that battery capacity degrades with age. Sony’s product information and specifications.
What Hi-Fi? lists approximately 32 hours for the NW-A306 in its 2026 alternative guide, a separate editorial figure from Sony’s condition-specific estimates. It also notes limited internal free space and an Android interface it considers potentially cumbersome. These are editorial observations, not a promise about every user’s experience. Use Wi-Fi only when your listening requires it
For a library of files already on the player, Wi-Fi is not needed for playback. What Hi-Fi? notes that turning it off can support a fully offline experience and conserve battery; Wi-Fi is needed to download streaming apps or stream online music. For subscription downloads, connect when you need to install or refresh content, then follow the service’s own offline rules.

Make the decision in four checks
- Identify the source. Decide whether you will listen to phone-app downloads, files transferred from a computer, or a streaming service’s downloads.
- Check offline support. Confirm that the app, account, and exact player or phone let you download the content and play it offline.
- Estimate storage. Compare your library with usable—not just nominal—space, and verify whether a compatible memory card can expand it.
- Weigh the separation. A DAP makes sense if dedicated music playback, local-library handling, or a headphone connection you value justifies carrying and charging another device.
