Yes, if the specific PC, internet connection and streaming setup pass a realistic test—but an office PC’s age or label cannot establish that it will stay live unattended around the clock. OBS can send a YouTube stream from a computer, but its minimum system requirements are a compatibility floor, not a performance or uptime guarantee. Assess the exact machine and network, then test the full church production before relying on it.
What a used office PC can—and cannot—tell you
A used desktop can host OBS, which encodes and sends the video to YouTube. Whether it can handle the job depends on its processor and graphics hardware, supported operating system, encoder, video settings, scenes and inputs, and the condition of the computer and connection. The term “office PC” does not reveal those details.

OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements, but cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording. CPU demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Check that the operating system is supported by the OBS release you intend to use, and identify the exact processor, graphics hardware and available encoder before configuring the stream.
A successful test demonstrates that the setup can send a stream under the tested conditions. It does not prove that an unspecified used PC will run continuously without interruption. YouTube and OBS do not publish a universal 24/7 uptime guarantee for this kind of computer setup.

Check YouTube live-stream eligibility
Before investing time in configuration, confirm that the church’s YouTube channel can go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
Resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Pick settings to suit the service and the available upload connection, rather than assuming the PC should stream at the highest possible quality. YouTube’s current H.264 encoder recommendations include a video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are configuration recommendations, not measurements of the church’s internet service. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and warn that connection disruptions can break a stream.

For example, a 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate of 10 Mbps calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance, before accounting for other demands on the connection. This calculation is not a guarantee of stability: available upload speed can vary, and YouTube’s guidance also emphasizes having a reliable network. Check the connection at the PC’s installation location and under the conditions in which the stream will run.
The bitrate figures above are for H.264 video; total stream bitrate also includes audio. Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the full settings relevant to the encoder and format in use, and make sure the total bitrate fits the actual upload capacity.

Hardware or software encoding
If the computer has a supported hardware encoder, try it. OBS says hardware encoding generally moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, which can help performance. However, older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Compare the actual output and system load instead of assuming that hardware encoding will look identical on every PC. OBS explains the trade-offs in its guide to hardware encoding.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but its suggested settings still need testing with the intended video, audio and scenes. A simple prerecorded loop and a live service with camera inputs, presentation graphics and several audio sources place different demands on a system.

Assess the exact setup before the first service
- Identify the PC. Record its make and model, processor, graphics hardware, operating system and available hardware encoder. Confirm the installed OBS version supports that operating system; use the OBS system requirements as a compatibility check, not proof of performance.
- Define the production workload. List the cameras and capture devices, overlays, graphics, presentation software, audio sources, resolution and frame rate you plan to use. Include the complete scene arrangement, not just the camera feed.
- Configure a candidate encoder and output. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, or another encoder compatible with the system. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then confirm the output settings against YouTube’s encoder recommendations and your measured upload capacity.
- Check upload at the installation location. Test the intended connection, preferably under busy network conditions as well as quiet ones. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; do not treat a single speed result as proof that the connection will remain stable.
- Run a private or unlisted test with the real workload. Use sound and movement similar to the actual broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, confirm the event is accessible to the intended viewers, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube specifically recommends testing and monitoring these elements in its streaming tips.
- Assess unattended operation separately. Check the used PC’s physical condition and cooling; what happens after a power loss; how operating-system updates and restarts are handled; whether the network can recover; and who will notice and respond if the encoder or stream fails. These are practical reliability checks, not a published YouTube or OBS certification for 24/7 operation.
PC software versus a standalone encoder
YouTube supports both computer-based software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. It recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. The better fit depends on the existing PC’s capability, production complexity, external video and audio needs, and whether a dedicated device suits the church’s operating requirements. YouTube’s encoder overview describes the available approaches; it does not establish that every church needs a capture card or separate encoder.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: check channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions and whether first-time activation is still pending; YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The PC struggles or the output is poor: compare the actual production workload with the selected encoder, resolution and frame rate. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, and test a lower-demand output configuration rather than treating OBS’s minimum requirements as a performance promise.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: check available upload capacity against the total bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and investigate interruptions on the network path. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream.
- The preview looks acceptable but viewers have trouble: verify that the event is accessible to the intended audience and check stream health and audio/video quality during a representative test, as YouTube recommends.
- The setup works for one service but not unattended use: a short successful broadcast does not test recovery after power, network, software or operating-system interruptions. Make a separate plan to detect failures and restore the stream.
