Yes, a case or screen protector could contribute to distorted or unclear iPhone sound if it blocks an opening or interferes with sound. Apple recommends removing cases, films and screen protectors as part of troubleshooting. Removing them is a useful diagnostic test, not proof that an accessory is the cause.
How to check whether an accessory is involved
- Remove the accessories. Take off the case, screen protector and any film, then compare the sound. Apple’s instruction is to “Remove all screen protectors, films or cases from your device.” (Apple Support)
- Inspect the openings. Check the speaker opening for blockage or dirt. On iPhone, check the receiver opening as well.
- Clean gently if needed. Apple specifies a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid improvised cleaning methods that could damage the device.
If sound improves with the accessories off, one may have been obstructing sound. That comparison does not establish which accessory was responsible or rule out another cause.

What to test if distortion continues
Try the Ringtone and Alerts slider
Open Settings and adjust the Ringtone and Alerts slider. If you hear no sound, or the speaker button beside the slider is dimmed, Apple says the speaker may need service.

Check whether the problem is limited to calls
If sound is audible from the speaker, make a call and turn on speakerphone. Static or crackling during a call can be related to network or reception rather than the case or speaker. Try again later or from another location to see whether the symptom changes.

When to seek service
If distortion remains after removing accessories, checking the openings and testing sound, follow Apple’s service guidance. Persistent sound problems may require service; replacing an accessory is not a guaranteed fix.
If you replace an accessory
Only consider a replacement case or protector if removing the current one changes the sound. Match the accessory to your exact iPhone model and ensure it leaves the device openings unobstructed. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not compare accessory designs or materials, so it does not establish that a particular type is more likely to cause distortion.
