Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan a Bitcoin transaction be redirected without private keys? Usually, no: after an ordinary Bitcoin transaction has been validly signed, a stranger cannot simply change its recipient. But “redirected” can mean several different things. A changed transaction ID is not necessarily a changed destination; an eligible unconfirmed payment may be replaced; and a payer can be tricked into signing a payment to the wrong address in the first place.
What a Bitcoin transaction signature authorizes
A Bitcoin transaction spends specified inputs and creates specified outputs. An output identifies where value is sent and how it can later be spent. In an ordinary wallet payment, the relevant signature authorizes the spend under the applicable script conditions and commits to the transaction’s outputs. Changing a recipient therefore changes what the payer’s key has authorized; someone who does not have the required authorization cannot simply edit that signed payment and keep it valid.

This describes ordinary wallet transactions, not every possible signature scheme or script. The important practical distinction is whether a change was authorized by the spender, not whether an observer sees a different transaction identifier.
Four meanings of “redirected”
| When | What may change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Before the payer authorizes payment | The address presented for payment | The payer may sign a payment to an attacker’s address; the transaction is not being altered after signing. |
| After signing, while unconfirmed | A conflicting replacement transaction may be accepted under applicable node policy | The first version is not necessarily final. A replacement is another transaction, not an unauthorized edit of the first one. |
| In flight, through transaction malleability | The transaction representation or ID (txid) | The txid can change even though the inputs and outputs—and therefore the recipient—remain unchanged. |
| After confirmation | Not the recipient of the confirmed transaction itself | A stranger cannot rewrite its output in place. Confirmation does not mean absolute immunity to a chain reorganization. |
Can someone change the recipient after signing?
For an ordinary signed payment, changing the destination means changing an output. A third party cannot make that altered payment valid just by editing the transaction in transit: the altered transaction must satisfy the relevant authorization conditions. If the recipient address changes because a new transaction was signed, the payer—or someone with the necessary spending authority—authorized that new transaction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Keep this separate from a changed txid. Bitcoin’s Developer Guide describes cases where a transaction’s hash can change while its functional contents remain the same. BIP 62 also describes a valid transaction being modified in flight without access to the relevant private keys, while its inputs and outputs stay unchanged. BIP 62 is a closed proposal, not a complete specification of all current transaction rules; it is useful here to explain the distinction, not as a guide to every current implementation detail.
What Replace-by-Fee can—and cannot—do
Replace-by-Fee (RBF) concerns an unconfirmed transaction. BIP 125 describes opt-in signaling for replacement and warns recipients not to treat an unconfirmed transaction as final. Node relay policies can differ and change, so whether a replacement is accepted depends on the applicable policy and transaction circumstances.

A replacement is a separate transaction that conflicts with the earlier one; it is not an unrelated stranger changing the recipient inside the original signed transaction. A changed replacement must itself meet the authorization requirements for the inputs it spends. If you are accepting a payment, wait for confirmation before treating an unconfirmed version as settled.

An attacker may interfere with the payment request or with what the payer sees before signing—for example, by compromising a website, device, clipboard, or other part of the payment process. If the payer signs the attacker’s address, the payer has authorized the wrong destination; this is not a redirection of an already-valid signed transaction. BIP 70 identifies replacing a merchant’s address before hardware-wallet authorization as a man-in-the-middle threat. That historical payment-protocol proposal documents the risk; it does not establish that the protocol is currently adopted everywhere.

Before approving a payment, verify the recipient address and amount on the signing device’s trusted display, not only on the potentially compromised computer or phone. A hardware wallet can help with that review when used and checked correctly, but it is not a guarantee against every address-substitution attack and cannot reverse a transaction after broadcast.
Specialized signature proposals are not ordinary wallet behavior
BIP 118 describes a proposed signature mode called ANYPREVOUT for Taproot scripts. Under that specialized mode, an alternative input may allow a valid transaction with a different txid. Depending on the changes, the result could conflict with an original transaction or produce a double payment to the same recipient. That is not arbitrary redirection of an ordinary wallet payment, and it should not be generalized to typical transactions.

What to check if a payment looks different
- The txid changed, but the outputs match: A different txid alone does not show that the recipient changed. Compare the transaction’s outputs.
- A different transaction appears while the payment is unconfirmed: Treat the payment as unsettled until the relevant transaction confirms; unconfirmed transactions can be replaced under applicable policy.
- The address in the signed transaction is wrong: The payment was authorized to that address. A broadcast Bitcoin transaction cannot be recalled by a wallet or hardware device.
- The payment is confirmed: Check the transaction recorded in the chain. Confirmation is not an absolute guarantee against a chain reorganization, but it does not give a stranger a way to edit the transaction’s recipient in place.
These distinctions are consistent with the basic signature and chain-of-ownership model described in Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 Bitcoin paper, alongside the transaction mechanics and policy qualifications in the Bitcoin Developer Guide and the cited BIPs.
