Can a $45 Raspberry Pi Replace Windows for Remote Desktop Access?

A Raspberry Pi can serve some remote desktop and terminal jobs, but the $45 price and the claim that it beats Windows both need qualifying. Here is what Connect, VNC and SSH require.

A Raspberry Pi can work as a remote desktop endpoint for some jobs people normally do on a Windows PC, but the headline overstates the case. Two claims need qualifying. The $45 figure is not verified as a current price for any specific Raspberry Pi model, and it does not represent the cost of a complete working setup. Also, no independent, controlled comparison was located that shows a Pi outperforming Windows on speed or reliability, so this article does not make that claim. What the official Raspberry Pi documentation does establish is which remote access route fits which task, what each route requires, and where the limits are.

What the $45 figure does and does not cover

The figure in the headline is not tied to a verified model, memory configuration, or bundle. Board prices change, and a bare board is not the same thing as a setup you can use. Before you repeat the number, check the current price of the exact model you plan to buy from a seller you trust, and note what that price includes.

A working remote endpoint usually needs more than the board itself. Plan to budget separately for:

  • A power supply that matches the board’s specification.
  • Storage for the operating system. Confirm the storage requirement for the image you choose.
  • A display, keyboard, and mouse only if you expect to use the Pi locally at any point. Remote access alone does not require them, but the initial setup often does.
  • A case or cooling, if your environment calls for it.

Raspberry Pi’s Connect product page lists individual use of the service as free at the time it was consulted. Service features and pricing can change, so confirm them on the product page before you buy.

Desktop access and terminal access are different jobs

Most of the confusion in this topic comes from treating every remote session as the same thing. A full graphical desktop, a terminal, and a file or command session have different requirements. The table below compares the three routes Raspberry Pi documents.

Route What you get Network setup Operating system and display requirements Client on your Windows PC
Raspberry Pi Connect, screen sharing Graphical desktop in a browser Connect handles configuration. You do not need to find the Pi’s local or public IP address or change the local firewall. Requires Wayland. Incompatible with Raspberry Pi OS Lite and with systems running an X window server. A web browser
Raspberry Pi Connect, remote shell Terminal session in a browser Same Connect configuration as screen sharing Not stated in Raspberry Pi’s Connect documentation for this feature A web browser
VNC Desktop screen sharing A network connection, the Pi’s hostname or IP address, and valid account credentials Not stated beyond the general setup in Raspberry Pi’s remote access documentation A VNC client running on the Windows PC, connecting to a VNC server on the Pi
SSH Terminal access rather than a desktop Not stated in the Raspberry Pi documentation consulted for this article Not stated in the documentation consulted An SSH client

Setting up Raspberry Pi Connect

Connect is the route that most directly addresses the everyday problem of reaching a Pi from another location without configuring the network yourself. For graphical access, the checklist below covers the requirements that the documentation states.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
  • The Pi runs a desktop image using Wayland. Screen sharing is not supported on Raspberry Pi OS Lite or on systems that use an X window server.
  • The Pi has a network connection. Connect’s configuration does not require you to look up the Pi’s address or open ports in its local firewall.
  • The Windows PC has a web browser. Connect is browser-based, so no separate desktop client is needed for the Connect routes.

If the Pi runs Lite, you can still use Connect’s remote shell for command-line work, but you will not get a graphical desktop from that route.

When VNC or SSH is the better fit

VNC is the desktop option when Connect’s requirements do not match your Pi. Raspberry Pi describes it as desktop screen sharing, with a VNC server running on the Pi and a client on the other device. The setup asks for a working network path to the Pi, its hostname or IP address, and valid account credentials. That is more work than Connect, and it means the Pi must be reachable at the address you use. Your network arrangement determines whether that is simple or difficult.

SSH is the choice when the task is command-line administration and a graphical desktop adds nothing. It gives terminal access and nothing more. If your use case is editing files, running scripts, or checking services, SSH or Connect’s remote shell covers it without the overhead of a desktop session.

How the Connect connection is secured

Raspberry Pi’s Connect documentation says Connect uses WebRTC, and that traffic is encrypted with DTLS. If a direct connection between the browser and the Pi is not available, the documentation says the traffic may be relayed, still in encrypted form. These are the vendor’s descriptions of its design. They have not been independently audited in the sources consulted, so treat them as Raspberry Pi’s stated security model rather than third-party verification.

Where a Pi makes sense, and where Windows is the safer choice

The Pi is not a general replacement for a Windows PC. Its value as a remote endpoint depends on the job. The following is editorial judgment based on the documented features above, not a measured comparison.

  • A dedicated, always-on Linux endpoint for command-line work: a Pi with SSH or Connect’s remote shell is a reasonable low-cost option, provided the tasks are terminal-based.
  • A remote graphical desktop on a Pi running Wayland: Connect’s screen sharing is workable if you can accept the browser-based session and the Wayland requirement.
  • Any task that needs Windows software: the Pi is the wrong endpoint. Its remote desktop routes give you a Linux environment, not Windows applications.
  • A graphical session on a Lite image: not available through Connect. Use a desktop image, or use a terminal route.

No controlled benchmark comparing a Raspberry Pi and a Windows PC for responsiveness, frame rate, or reliability was located in preparing this article. Any claim that one is faster or more dependable would go beyond the evidence.

If you are deciding how to reach a machine at home or work, start by listing the tasks. If they are terminal tasks, a Pi with SSH or Connect’s remote shell is a sensible option to test. If they need a graphical desktop, confirm the Pi’s operating system and display server before buying hardware for it.
