Yes—if the stream uses prerecorded video uploaded to a cloud service. The service stores the video and sends it to YouTube from its own infrastructure, so your computer does not have to stay on after the broadcast is running. If the stream depends on a live camera, gameplay, or another feed that exists only on your PC, turning that PC off also turns off the source.
Why a cloud stream can keep going without your PC
In a typical computer-based broadcast, an encoder sends video from a running computer to YouTube. A cloud service moves that job off your computer: you upload a prerecorded video or playlist, connect the YouTube destination, and start the broadcast. The service then sends the stored media to YouTube. Once the stream is running and you have verified the feed, you can close the browser or shut down your PC.
This is different from remotely controlling your PC. The ongoing video comes from the service’s stored copy, not from a machine at home that must remain powered on and connected.
What works—and what stops when the PC shuts down
Uploaded prerecorded video
A cloud prerecorded-stream service can loop an uploaded video or playlist without relying on your home computer. This is the relevant setup for continuous music, ambient video, or other prerecorded programming. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists cloud-based tools for 24/7 prerecorded streams without a dedicated PC.

A live camera, game, or computer-generated feed
A cloud loop service cannot continue a source that exists only on your powered-off PC. A live camera, gameplay session, or other live production needs its source and encoder to keep running somewhere. That could be a computer or server you maintain, or appropriate dedicated hardware; moving a prerecorded file to the cloud does not move a live source with it.
How to start a cloud prerecorded stream safely
- Check that your YouTube channel can go live. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it and confirm access before you plan a launch.
- Choose a service and check its current terms. Confirm that it supports YouTube, looping or playlists, the duration you need, your intended video quality, storage needs, and the recovery behavior and plan limits that matter to you.
- Upload the video or build a playlist. Use the service’s upload or media-selection flow. For a playlist, check the order and confirm what happens when the end is reached.
- Connect the YouTube destination. Follow the service’s encoder or channel-connection steps. If it asks for a YouTube stream key, treat it as a secret: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not include it in screenshots or public documents. If you believe it has been exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the service using the new key.
- Start the broadcast and verify it in YouTube. Confirm that the live event is receiving video and that playback looks and sounds right before leaving. Do not treat the ability to shut down your PC as proof that the stream started successfully.
- Shut down only after verification. Once the cloud service is sending the uploaded media and YouTube is receiving it, your PC can be turned off. The cloud service—not your home computer—now handles the prerecorded stream.
Choose the right way to keep a YouTube stream running
For uploaded prerecorded content, a cloud service is the most direct fit for the PC-off requirement. Other approaches can work, but they leave more of the ongoing operation in your hands or keep equipment at your location.

Other cloud options have their own limits. OneStream Live’s help page, updated September 3, 2026, says its 24/7 streaming feature is YouTube-only, requires an Enterprise plan, and limits each broadcast to 30 days. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube videos without a dedicated PC. Check each provider’s current terms before choosing.

Confirm rights to everything you broadcast
Uploading media to a streaming service does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Check the rights for the video, music, images, and other material in the playlist before scheduling a long-running stream. YouTube can apply its copyright rules to live broadcasts; do not assume that a recording is safe to stream simply because it is already online or because a previous upload remained available.

Understand what automatic recovery can and cannot do
A provider may attempt to reconnect after YouTube drops a stream, but a recovery feature is not an uptime guarantee. A disconnect can still interrupt viewing, and the service’s current documentation should explain what happens after a failed reconnection, a lost YouTube connection, or a provider-side issue. Check the broadcast in YouTube after starting and again if viewers report a break.
Keep the stream key private
The stream key lets an encoder send a feed to the corresponding YouTube stream. Handle it like a password: do not post it, share it in public support requests, or leave it visible in screenshots. If it is compromised, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the cloud service or encoder.

Troubleshooting a stream that stops or never appears
- You cannot start a live stream: If this is your first time going live, YouTube enablement may still be pending; allow up to 24 hours and check the channel’s live-stream access again.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the correct YouTube destination and stream key are configured, and that the cloud broadcast is actually started. A mistyped or outdated key can prevent the encoder from sending the stream.
- The PC turns off and the stream stops: Determine whether the service is streaming an uploaded file or relying on a live source from your PC. A cloud prerecorded loop should use the uploaded media; a live camera, game, or other local feed still needs an active source and encoder somewhere.
- The stream drops and does not return: Check the service’s current status and recovery instructions, then verify the YouTube event and restart or reconnect according to the provider’s workflow. Automatic recovery is an attempt, not a guarantee.
- The broadcast ends before you expect: Check the provider’s plan and per-broadcast duration limits. For example, OneStream Live documents a 30-day maximum per broadcast for its 24/7 feature.
- The video or audio is not what you intended: Review the uploaded file or playlist and confirm playback during the initial verification. YouTube also documents encoder auto-start and auto-stop settings; check their state if a scheduled or configured broadcast begins or ends unexpectedly.
