Can a 10-Minute EV Charge Work With Today’s Charging Stations?

A ten-minute EV charge can add useful range at a compatible high-power DC station, but charging from 10% to 80% typically takes longer. Vehicle capability, charger compatibility and battery conditions matter.

Yes—if you mean a quick top-up, not a full 10%–80% charge. A compatible EV at a high-power DC fast charger can add useful range in ten minutes. For example, Mercedes-Benz says its 2027 CLA can add up to 200 miles in ten minutes at compatible locations, but estimates about 22 minutes for a 10%–80% charge. Actual charging depends on the car, charger, battery condition and compatibility.

What does a 10-minute EV charge actually mean?

“Miles added in ten minutes” and “time to charge from 10% to 80%” describe different things. A short stop may add substantial driving range without bringing the battery close to full. Automakers’ range figures are model-specific estimates, not a universal promise for EVs.

Mercedes-Benz USA says the 2027 CLA can add up to 200 miles of range in ten minutes at compatible locations; its guidance specifies 800 V chargers for that claim. The company separately estimates a 10%–80% charge in as little as 22 minutes at stations supporting up to 320 kW. These are manufacturer claims for that vehicle and charging context, not independent test results. Mercedes-Benz NACS charging guidance

How long do fast EVs take to charge from 10% to 80%?

Official U.S. examples show that even fast 10%–80% sessions generally take longer than ten minutes. The estimates below apply to the named vehicles and stated charging conditions; they should not be treated as directly comparable test results.

Why a 350 kW station may not charge your car at 350 kW

The station’s advertised maximum is not the rate your vehicle is guaranteed to receive. The vehicle has its own maximum DC acceptance rate, and its charging curve changes over the session. Chevrolet explains that a car capable of accepting 150 kW will charge at 150 kW even when connected to a 350 kW station. Public DC fast-charging stations generally range from 24 kW to 350 kW, according to Chevrolet’s current support guidance.

Peak power is also not sustained throughout a charge. Chevrolet says a station supplies its full output only briefly to protect the battery, and that in moderate temperatures drivers can expect the vehicle’s peak rate for about ten minutes between 10% and 40% state of charge. The rate may taper outside that window. Chevrolet guidance on DC fast-charging power levels

What determines whether a ten-minute stop will be useful?

  • Vehicle acceptance and charging curve: Check the exact model’s DC charging capability. Peak acceptance is not a promise that the car will hold that rate for ten minutes.
  • Station output and voltage compatibility: A high kW rating alone does not establish that the car can use the charger’s full output. Some vehicle claims depend on compatible voltage and charging equipment.
  • Battery state and temperature: State of charge and battery temperature affect the rate. Battery conditioning or other vehicle settings may also apply; follow the vehicle maker’s guidance.
  • What the claim measures: Range added, a brief top-up and a defined 10%–80% session are distinct measures. Confirm which one a quoted time refers to.
  • Connector, adapter and access: The inlet and station connector must match, directly or through an automaker-approved adapter, and the vehicle must be able to access the network.

Check compatibility before you plan around a fast charge

Charging hardware and adapter rules vary by vehicle. Mercedes-Benz says the 2027 CLA has a NACS inlet and includes an adapter for CCS1 stations. Its guidance also says certain Mercedes vehicles with CCS1 inlets need an approved NACS-to-CCS1 adapter to use NACS stations, and warns that Tesla policy prohibits third-party adapters not sold or distributed by an automaker. Verify the exact car’s inlet and approved adapter rather than assuming a generic adapter will work. Mercedes-Benz adapter and charging guidance

Mercedes-Benz describes its own High-Power Charging network as supporting up to 400 kW and says MB.CHARGE Public provides access to over 170,000 stations across public networks. Those are network-specific claims, not a guarantee that a compatible, available charger is nearby or will reproduce a vehicle’s advertised result. Check the specific station and its access requirements when planning a stop. Mercedes-Benz EV charging overview

How to judge an advertised ten-minute charging claim

  1. Identify the exact vehicle, model year and market the claim covers.
  2. Check whether the claim is miles of range added or a battery percentage interval, and note its stated starting conditions.
  3. Confirm the required charger power, voltage, connector and any approved adapter.
  4. Check the vehicle maker’s guidance on battery temperature, state of charge and conditioning.
  5. Use the station’s current listing and network access information to confirm that a compatible charger is available for your trip.

Published estimates can help compare scenarios, but they do not establish the result at a particular charger on a particular day. The examples above are U.S. manufacturer guidance and manual estimates; they are not independent comparative tests.
