The practical choices are to keep a coax-based video system with compatible HD-over-coax cameras and a DVR, or use a matched coax-to-Ethernet adapter pair to connect selected IP cameras. Which runs can stay depends on the cable, connectors, length, camera power, and compatibility of the exact equipment.
Start with an inventory of the existing system
Before choosing cameras or adapters, map each run from camera to recorder. A cable that looks intact may still be unsuitable for the new camera’s power needs or the adapter’s distance limits.

- At each camera, note visible cable markings and type, approximate run length, connectors, splices or couplers, and any separate power wiring.
- Look for crushed or cracked jacket, corrosion, moisture, loose connectors, and other damage.
- At the recorder, record its model, whether its inputs are BNC coax or Ethernet, supported camera formats and resolutions, available channels, and how cameras are powered.
- Identify the intended camera models and their power draw before checking the cable limits.
Cable construction, condition, connectors, power requirements, and recorder compatibility all affect whether a run can be reused. If a run’s type or length is unknown, treat it as something to verify rather than assuming it will work.

Keep a coax-based video system
HD-over-coax technology can carry video over existing coax while keeping the system on a compatible DVR. Costar’s HD-TVI FAQ says its technology works over old or existing coax, and describes a recorder supporting HD-TVI and analog cameras. Its January 2016 FAQ gives historical transmission figures of 1,500 ft (500 m) over RG59/RG6 and 700 ft (200 m) over UTP. Those are claims for the product context described in that FAQ, not current universal limits.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check that the DVR supports the camera’s signal format and resolution, and verify the exact models’ compatibility. A recorder that accepts multiple formats does not automatically support every camera or resolution.
Convert selected coax runs for IP cameras
A matched coax-to-Ethernet adapter pair can carry network traffic over a coax run, allowing an IP camera to connect without replacing that cable. The product’s specified arrangement matters: for example, the network-side adapter may connect to a PoE switch or NVR while the camera-side adapter connects to the camera. Confirm the adapter pair, camera, PoE source, and recorder are compatible and connected as their manufacturers specify.

Replace only runs that do not pass validation
If one run is damaged, too long for the chosen equipment, poorly connected, or unable to supply the required power, prioritize that run for replacement. Other runs can remain if they meet the selected system’s specifications. This run-by-run approach avoids treating an entire installation as either reusable or unusable.

Validate each run against the actual product limits
Distance figures are not transferable between adapter models or camera systems. Cable construction, connector quality, camera power draw, and installation condition can change the result. For the AXIS T8640/T8645 single-channel kits, Axis publishes the following manufacturer-stated maximums without the additional T8003 power supply, with a PoE/PoE+ switch as the power source:
| Cable construction | 5 W | 10 W | 15 W | 20 W | 25 W | 60 W midspan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG-59, 22 AWG copper-coated steel center conductor | 225 m | 125 m | 100 m | 60 m | N/A | 270 m |
| RG-59, 22 AWG core | 300 m | 300 m | 265 m | 195 m | N/A | 300 m |
| RG-59, 20 AWG core | 300 m | 300 m | 300 m | 300 m | N/A | 300 m |
| RG-11, 14 AWG core | 500 m | 500 m | 500 m | 500 m | N/A | 500 m |
Axis says its copper-coated steel figures represent worst-case performance when the cable type is unknown. It also cautions that actual range depends on cable quality and thickness, connectors, and the camera. For the 60 W midspan column, Axis notes that the midspan powers the remote adapter and local camera power is required. These figures apply to the named kit and setup only; they do not establish limits for other PoE-over-coax products.

Lorex’s support article, modified October 23, 2025, says performance and supported length depend on coax and coupler quality. Its product specifications list RG59 modes of 400 m at 100 Mbps and 1,000 m at 10 Mbps, while the broader article also describes reach up to 900 m. These figures describe Lorex’s product context, not a guarantee for an unknown cable or another adapter system.
Other vendor figures likewise belong to distinct products and periods. Dahua’s 2017–2018 catalog lists HDCVI transmission up to 1,200 m over coax and 450 m over UTP. Eaton states reach up to 500 m for its industrial Ethernet-over-coax solution for the HERNIS HD IP FLEX CCTV system; Eaton’s page describes the system as transmitting IP data across existing analogue cabling. Neither figure should be used to size a different system.

Compare the two upgrade paths before buying
| Planning question | HD over coax with a DVR | IP camera over coax adapters |
|---|---|---|
| What stays in use? | Existing coax carries video in a compatible coax-based system. | Existing coax carries network traffic through a matched adapter pair. |
| What must match? | Camera signal format and resolution must be supported by the DVR. | Camera, adapter pair, PoE source, and network recorder must work together. |
| What needs run-by-run checking? | Cable condition and the selected cameras’ and DVR’s specifications. | Cable construction, length, connectors, camera power, and adapter specifications. |
| Can migration be partial? | Depends on the DVR and camera compatibility for the channels involved. | Axis describes its single-channel kit for incremental replacement; other products may differ. |
Choose based on the system you want, not just the cable you already own. If you want to retain a coax-based DVR, confirm its format support. If you want IP cameras on existing runs, confirm a matched adapter solution exists for the exact camera, power source, and recorder. The cost and disruption of retaining compatible runs can be weighed against replacing runs that fail the checks.
Stage the upgrade and test before expanding it
- Select a pilot run. Choose a run whose cable type, length, connectors, and condition are understood, and confirm it fits the intended equipment specifications.
- Install one camera using the manufacturer’s connection and power arrangement. For an adapter retrofit, use the matched units in the specified positions between camera, coax, and PoE/network equipment.
- Check the complete path. Confirm live video, recording, network link where applicable, and operation at night before moving on to other cameras.
- Record the result for that run. Note the equipment and cable details so later decisions are based on the installed combination rather than an assumed system-wide limit.
- Expand only to runs that meet the requirements. Replace a run if its condition, length, connectors, or power needs fall outside the chosen product’s specifications.
A staged approach limits disruption and leaves room to change plans if a particular run does not work with the selected equipment. Axis explicitly describes incremental replacement for its single-channel kit; testing the full video and recording path before wider deployment is a prudent planning step, not a guarantee that every site will succeed.
