A folder shown as Pictures in Windows Explorer is not, by itself, proof that Windows renamed a directory called Camera. Microsoft documents Camera Roll as the default destination for photos and videos captured with a camera, and its troubleshooting instructions direct users to inspect Camera Roll through Pictures. To identify where a particular image was saved, use the Camera app’s Open Folder command and check the full path and folder name.
First distinguish Camera, Camera Roll, and Pictures
These names can refer to different things:
- Camera may be the name you expect for a directory, or a label you see in Explorer.
- Camera Roll is the folder name Microsoft uses for the default destination of photos and videos captured with a built-in camera or webcam.
- Pictures is a known folder in Windows and the Explorer location Microsoft’s Camera Roll troubleshooting procedure tells users to inspect.
Microsoft’s documentation establishes an association between Pictures and Camera Roll; it does not establish that Windows automatically renames a directory literally named Camera to Pictures. Check the actual path before treating a displayed navigation label as a folder rename. Microsoft’s Camera Roll troubleshooting guide and its File Explorer guide describe these locations and Explorer navigation.

Find the actual save location of a Camera app photo
If you are trying to locate a specific photo or video made with the Windows Camera app, open that item in the app rather than guessing from a thumbnail or navigation label.
- Open the photo or video in the Windows Camera app.
- Select the ellipsis (…).
- Select Open Folder. The app opens the location where that item was saved.
- Check the folder name and full path in File Explorer. This distinguishes a directory actually named
CamerafromCamera Rollor a Pictures location.
Microsoft documents this action in How to use the Windows Camera app.

If Camera Roll is missing or the app cannot save
Microsoft’s missing-folder guidance recommends checking the selected destination first. The setting label and path differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10:
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > System > Storage > Change where new content is saved.
Review New photos and videos will save to. If the destination is an external drive, make sure it is connected. Then use Microsoft’s additional checks if needed:

Explorer’s navigation layout is not the same thing as a folder’s physical path. Microsoft says that beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2, known folders such as Pictures are shown by default in Quick access and the navigation pane rather than under This PC. Seeing Pictures in a different part of the navigation pane therefore does not establish that a Camera folder was renamed or moved. Use Open Folder or inspect the path to identify the actual location.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before concluding Windows renamed a folder
- Is the item you are looking at a Camera app capture, the Camera Roll folder, or a directory you named
Camera? - Does the full path show
Camera,Camera Roll, or a Pictures location? - Are you looking at a navigation-pane entry, or at the actual folder opened in File Explorer?
- If saving fails, is the configured destination available and writable?
The Microsoft support guidance cited here does not explain a general Windows behavior that changes a directory named Camera into one named Pictures. If the full path or folder properties show something unexpected, record that exact information before diagnosing it as a rename.
