Built-in tools can identify suspicious callers, screen some unknown calls, silence them, or block specific numbers. Add a third-party app only if those controls leave a problem unsolved—and check the app’s privacy practices and compatibility first. Available sources do not establish that third-party apps outperform built-in filters across phones.
First, know what “spam protection” does
Call filters can behave in several distinct ways, and a warning is not the same as stopping a call:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Label: The phone shows caller information or a potential-spam warning. The call may still ring.
- Screen: The service interacts with an unknown caller before you decide whether to answer. Availability depends on the phone and location.
- Silence: The phone does not ring for selected calls, which may instead go to voicemail.
- Block: Calls from a particular number are prevented from reaching you in the usual way.
The FTC explains that call labeling can leave a call coming through with a warning. When comparing settings or apps, check which of these actions they actually perform.

iPhone: identify, screen, or silence unknown callers
Apple’s iPhone call controls include options to screen unknown callers by asking them for a reason for calling, or to silence unknown callers and send them to voicemail. The result depends on the selected option and iOS version; calls from people you do not have saved may not ring when silence is enabled. That can reduce interruptions, but it also means you may miss an expected call from a new contact. Apple documents the available controls in its iPhone guide to screening and blocking calls and its unknown-caller guidance.

Google Phone: caller ID, spam warnings, and supported Call Screen
Google Phone can identify callers or businesses outside your contacts and warn about potential spam. Google says numbers from outside a user’s contacts may be sent to Google to help identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. Caller identification and a warning do not necessarily mean the call has been screened or blocked. On supported devices and in supported locations, Call Screen can use what a caller says or Google’s spammer database to detect spam. Google says Call Screen transcripts and recordings are stored on the phone and are not saved to the user’s Google Account or activity history. See Google’s information on caller ID and spam protection and Call Screen privacy. Check your Phone app and device settings to see which features are available to you.
Samsung Galaxy: Smart Call
Samsung Smart Call identifies callers outside your contacts and offers spam protection; Samsung says the features are provided by Hiya. Support can depend on the Galaxy device, carrier, and location, so confirm what your particular phone offers on Samsung’s Smart Call page and in your Phone app.

When a third-party app makes sense
Consider an app if you have a specific gap—for example, you need caller identification or blocking that your built-in tools do not provide. Third-party apps may offer caller ID, blocking, or screening, but features and availability vary. The FTC describes call-blocking apps as a filtering option and advises consumers to check an app’s privacy policy before installing it. An app is not automatically a more effective upgrade: the available sources do not provide a controlled, head-to-head accuracy comparison or a universal spam-blocking rate.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before installing or enabling an app, check:
- What it actually does: Does it label, screen, silence, or block calls?
- Compatibility: Are the features available for your phone, operating-system version, carrier, and region?
- Privacy: What caller or contact information does the app collect, and how does its privacy policy say that information is used?
- Trade-offs: Could its rules silence or block a legitimate call from an unsaved number?
- Ongoing effort: Will you need to review settings, blocked numbers, or reports?
The Hiya App Store listing, for example, says feature availability varies by region, device, operating system, carrier, and plan. That is a reminder to verify the feature you need on your own setup rather than relying on an app’s general description.

- COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

Practical decision
- Decide what you need: A warning, screening, silence, or a block are different outcomes.
- Try the built-in control that matches: For example, use an iPhone’s unknown-caller option if you want calls silenced to voicemail, or check whether Call Screen is available on your Google Phone setup if you want callers screened.
- Check the trade-off: Consider whether silencing or screening could disrupt expected calls from people who are not in your contacts.
- Add an app only for a remaining need: Confirm the specific feature works on your device and in your region, then review its privacy policy before enabling it.
