Caleb Williams will miss the Chicago Bears’ Oct. 4, 2026 game against the New York Jets because of a hamstring injury, according to the team’s Oct. 2 update. Chicago had not chosen a replacement as of that update, naming Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum as the candidates. The decision could change before kickoff.
Why is Caleb Williams out?
Williams injured his right hamstring midway through the fourth quarter of Chicago’s Sept. 20 game against Minnesota. On Sept. 21, head coach Ben Johnson described him as “week-to-week” and said, “I’m not putting a timeline on this. Who will start for the Bears if Williams is out?
As of Oct. 2, the Bears had not decided between Bagent and Keenum for the Jets game. The team’s Sept. 8 depth chart listed Williams first, Bagent second and Keenum third, but that earlier general order does not confirm the game-specific choice. Johnson described the two backups as having different skill sets and said both were “very cerebral players.” In comments about the Eagles game, he also said one was “a little bit more mobile than the other,” without identifying which quarterback he meant. Was Williams benched, or was he rested?
The August preseason absence was a separate, planned workload decision—not the hamstring injury that later sidelined Williams in the regular season. Chicago held Williams and other starters out of its preseason opener, with Bagent starting.
