The right cable modem or router depends first on your internet provider and service tier—not a headline Wi-Fi speed. Check that the exact modem model is approved for your plan, then decide whether you need a modem-router gateway or a separate router. The NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30S is one example to investigate, not a universal or independently tested winner.
How to choose equipment that works with your cable plan
- Check the exact model with your ISP. Provider approval can be model-specific. NETGEAR distinguishes devices an ISP has certified and tested from devices it considers compatible and expects to work; confirm the status on your provider’s current equipment list. NETGEAR’s CAX30S page also directs buyers to check compatibility with their provider’s speed tier.
- Confirm the plan tier, not just the provider name. A device listed as compatible with a provider may not support every speed tier or configuration. Verify the specific model against the service you subscribe to.
- Check for voice service. If your cable package includes landline phone service, make sure the equipment explicitly supports it. The CAX30S product page excludes bundled cable voice service.
- Compare the total cost. Weigh the equipment purchase against any recurring ISP equipment charge. The available product information does not establish current prices or whether buying will save money for a particular customer.
Choose between a modem, a gateway, and a separate router
Cable modem
A modem connects a cable service to your home network. It does not provide Wi-Fi by itself, so you generally connect it to a router if you want wireless access or multiple network connections.

Modem-router gateway
A gateway combines a cable modem and router in one unit. This can simplify the equipment setup, but it must still be approved for your ISP and plan. Check voice-service requirements before choosing one.
Separate modem and router
With separate equipment, the cable modem connects to the provider’s network and the router connects behind it to distribute the connection. NETGEAR explains that a router must connect to the appropriate upstream device for the internet service; on cable, that means a compatible cable modem or gateway. NETGEAR’s router information says its standalone routers and mesh systems can be used with any ISP, but they do not replace the modem or other terminal equipment required by the service.

What advertised Wi-Fi speed can—and cannot—tell you
A Wi-Fi speed figure is not the same thing as the speed your devices will get from your internet plan. Actual results depend on the service tier, the wired connection, the devices using Wi-Fi, and the home environment. The gathered manufacturer pages do not provide independent performance tests or a comparative coverage assessment, so do not treat the listed maximums as guaranteed results.

Before paying extra for a higher advertised rate, verify the ISP tier and connection requirements. For a large or difficult-to-cover home, investigate whether a mesh system is appropriate, but the available evidence does not establish a coverage winner or a specific mesh recommendation.
