Bytes Issue #517 uses the line to introduce htmx 4.0, released on August 28, 2026, and to explain how the library lets HTML attributes trigger server requests and update page content with returned HTML.
Why does Bytes say “100 years of htmx”?
Bytes #517, published September 1, 2026, treats the phrase as comic hyperbole. Its author imagines future generations still writing htmx and jokes that, if that happens, they will take back past criticism of HTML. The issue offers no evidence or guarantee of a century-long lifespan; the line is a playful way to frame the release, not a forecast.

The concrete news is htmx 4.0. The project announced the release on August 28, 2026, shortly before the newsletter appeared. Bytes says the release came eight months after the alpha announcement and attributes the time to work iterating on a new extension system. That timeline and explanation are the newsletter author’s account; the project announcement confirms the release and its features, but does not independently establish the team’s development process.
How does htmx work?
htmx lets an HTML element declare an event-driven HTTP request. The server returns HTML, and htmx applies that response to the page. For example, hx-get tells an element to send a GET request; the official reference says the returned HTML is swapped into the DOM.

Two attributes control where and how that update happens:
hx-targetselects the element to update.hx-swapdetermines how the response is applied. The documented default forhx-getis to replace the target element’sinnerHTML.
In practical terms, the browser event, request, response and page update can be described in HTML attributes and server-rendered markup, rather than requiring the response to be data that client-side code must turn into a view. The project’s htmx 4 documentation and hx-get reference describe these mechanics.

What changed in htmx 4.0?
The August 28, 2026 release announcement describes htmx 4.0 as rebuilt around the browser’s fetch API. The announcement highlights changes to both response handling and the extension ecosystem:
- Morphing swaps: a way to update page content while preserving more of the existing DOM structure.
<hx-partial>: a mechanism for updating multiple targets.- Extensions: the announcement lists support for Server-Sent Events (
hx-sse), WebSockets (hx-ws), multipart streaming (hx-multipart), preloading and history caching.
These are release features, not evidence that htmx is guaranteed to be maintained for any particular length of time. The release announcement is the source for the feature list: htmx 4.0.0 has been released.

What should existing htmx users check?
Do not assume examples written for an earlier version behave identically in 4.0. The project notes that attribute-inheritance defaults changed, so check the htmx 4 documentation when updating an implementation or adapting older examples. Extension behavior and configuration should likewise be verified against the documentation for the version in use.

The “100 years” line is the Bytes author’s punchline. The useful takeaway is narrower: htmx 4.0 is a significant release centered on a fetch-based implementation, HTML-driven requests and updates, and an expanded set of response and extension capabilities. The sources establish those mechanics and release features; they do not establish htmx’s future lifespan, adoption, market share, or performance relative to other libraries.
