There is no universal Knock Code trick established by the available evidence for unlocking every LG phone. The documented limitation is more specific: a 2020 peer-reviewed study found that people’s chosen Knock Codes could be predictable and weaker than the PINs and Android patterns it evaluated. That is a problem of guessable choices, not proof of a technical flaw that bypasses authentication. If you own a locked phone, use the recovery method documented for its exact model rather than an unverified lock-removal procedure.
What Knock Code does—and what it does not do
LG’s Knock Code is a screen-lock feature: you unlock by tapping a sequence that you chose. In LG’s G4 instructions, the sequence is entered on the screen while it is off or after waking the phone to its lock screen. The documented G4 setup uses three to eight taps on a 2×2 grid and asks the owner to set a backup PIN. Menu labels and behavior may vary by model, software version, and carrier. Knock Code is distinct from KnockON. KnockON is the double-tap gesture to wake or turn off the display; Knock Code is the selected sequence used to unlock it. Neither is a separate physical accessory.

What the security study says about bypassing Knock Code
A peer-reviewed study presented at the 2020 USENIX Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security examined user-selected Knock Codes. The authors found the codes in their study significantly weaker than the PINs and Android patterns they evaluated. In their simulated attacker setting, using a 2×3 grid did not improve security, while blocklisting common choices improved results and brought Knock Code security closer to Android patterns. The practical takeaway is about predictability: a code that seems personal can still resemble common choices. The study does not demonstrate a generic method for defeating authentication on a specific phone, nor does it establish that every Knock Code implementation is vulnerable. Its results concern the code choices and simulated guessing it evaluated, not a universal exploit for current LG devices.
What owners of a locked LG phone should do
Recovery rules differ across devices, so use the manual or official support instructions for the exact model and software version. Do not assume a retry count or account-recovery option documented for one LG phone applies to another.

For the G4 example, LG says to create a backup PIN during setup. Its instructions state that after five incorrect entries a warning appears, and after the sixth incorrect entry the backup PIN is required. Check the G4 instructions here. A separate LG manual describes a different retry policy and says recovery may use a backup PIN or Google account, illustrating why owners should consult their own device documentation. Choosing a screen lock: what the evidence supports
Google’s general Android guidance recommends a six-digit PIN for added security and describes a strong password as the most secure standard lock option. That is general guidance, not confirmation that every older LG model offers the same settings. Google’s Android screen-lock guidance.
Android’s technical documentation says knowledge-based lock-screen checks are protected against brute-force attempts with rate limiters in a Trusted Execution Environment or Secure Element. The documented policies vary by Android version, with stronger policies described for newer releases; this does not establish how a particular legacy Knock Code phone handles retries.
