You can use a Linux virtual private server (VPS) as a remote machine for Claude Code, but buying the server does not install Claude Code or include access to Anthropic’s models. Choose a supported Linux image, provision the VM, connect over SSH, install Claude Code using Anthropic’s current instructions, then authenticate separately.
What you are buying—and what you are not
A VPS gives you a remote Linux environment for your project files, terminal sessions and development tools. Claude Code runs in that environment and connects to model APIs. Anthropic says it runs locally in a terminal and does not require a special backend server or remote code index (Anthropic’s Claude Code product page).

The hosting and model access are separate. Your provider bills for the VM and any applicable hosting services; Anthropic account or API access has its own eligibility and billing arrangements. A provider’s Linux VPS listing is not evidence that it offers Claude Code preinstalled or managed.
Check the requirements before you purchase
Anthropic’s setup documentation lists Ubuntu 20.04 or later and Debian 10 or later among supported systems, a minimum of 4 GB RAM, an internet connection, and availability in an Anthropic-supported country. For the npm installation method, it lists Node.js 18 or later. These are published requirements, not a recommended server size for every project. Check Anthropic’s current setup guide and the provider’s current image and architecture options before ordering; requirements and installation methods can change.
#1 Best Overall
Beyond those minimums, choose resources for what you will do on the server: compiling or testing large projects, running multiple tools, and keeping several sessions active can require more capacity than simply editing a small repository. No provider-specific Claude Code benchmark establishes a universally best VM size.
Compare VPS options on the details that affect your workflow
DigitalOcean and Hetzner both document general-purpose Linux virtual machines that can serve as remote development environments. Their product pages do not establish a Claude Code-specific preinstallation or performance advantage. Compare the current offer details rather than choosing on a headline price alone.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Linux distributions and architecture | Confirm that the offered image and processor architecture are compatible with Anthropic’s current requirements. |
| RAM, CPU and storage | Match capacity to your repository, build and test workload, and the other processes you expect to run. |
| Shared or dedicated CPU | Providers distinguish shared-resource VMs from dedicated-CPU options; consider how predictable CPU availability matters for your work. |
| Region and network terms | Check location, transfer allowances and any public-IP or networking charges that apply to your plan. |
| Billing and lifecycle | Check hourly and monthly rates, monthly caps, backup or snapshot costs, and whether a powered-off VM continues to incur charges. |
| Support and recovery options | Check what help and backup mechanisms are included, and what each costs, before relying on the VM for persistent work. |
DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux virtual machines, with shared and dedicated CPU configurations and images including Ubuntu and Debian. Its Droplets page and pricing page are the places to confirm currently available plans and prices. Any advertised starting price can change and may not represent the resources or options you need.
Hetzner
Hetzner offers cloud VMs with Linux images including Ubuntu and Debian, and distinguishes shared-resource servers from dedicated CPU resources. Its Cloud page and plan overview describe the current options. Hetzner notes that a created server remains billable until deleted, even when it is powered off, so shutting it down is not necessarily a way to stop the charge.

Purchase and install Claude Code
- Select a Linux image and plan. Choose a supported distribution and verify the image’s architecture, available RAM, CPU, storage, region and billing terms in the provider’s current console.
- Provision the VM and configure remote access. Follow the provider’s documented provisioning and SSH instructions. Protect access to the server and your project credentials; the hosting product pages are not a complete security-hardening guide.
- Connect to the server’s Linux shell. Use the SSH details and access method configured during provisioning.
- Install using Anthropic’s live instructions. Follow the Linux installation method in Anthropic’s setup guide. If you choose npm, Anthropic lists Node.js 18 or later and warns against using
sudo npm install -gbecause of permission and security risks. Use the current documented commands rather than relying on an old installation snippet. - Verify the installation. Anthropic documents
claude doctoras an installation check. Run the currently documented check, then move into the project directory you want to work on before starting Claude Code. - Authenticate for model access. Complete sign-in through a method Anthropic currently supports for your account or organization. Console access requires active billing; eligible Claude plans and enterprise platforms may have other authentication routes. The applicable model-access charges are separate from the VPS invoice.
Plan for sign-in over SSH
A browser-based sign-in flow may try to return to a local address on the machine where the login began. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance notes that this callback can fail over remote SSH, in devcontainers or behind strict firewalls. If sign-in does not complete, consult the current Claude Code troubleshooting guidance for the supported remote-login approach; do not assume an older OAuth workaround is still valid.

Who should use a VPS?
- It can fit: developers who want a persistent remote Linux workspace, access to the same project environment from different devices, or a machine that is separate from their personal computer.
- A local installation may be simpler: people who already have a compatible computer and do not need a remote workspace avoid paying for a server and managing SSH access.
- Review security and data handling: a remote VM holds the project files and credentials you place on it. Consider who can access the account, how the provider’s storage and backup options work, and whether your project’s policies permit storing code there.
