There is no single best router for every business. Choose one by matching its WAN capacity, backup-link needs, VPN performance, network-separation controls, and management model to your office—and plan Wi-Fi separately if the router is a wired gateway.
Start with the internet connection and WAN requirements
Check the speed of your internet service and the router’s WAN port speed before comparing models. A router cannot make a slower port handle a faster service connection. Decide whether you need one ISP connection or multiple links, and whether the router must support failover, load balancing, or both. Confirm those capabilities and the device’s WAN-port count in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Also distinguish port speed from routing performance. A gigabit port describes the link rate at that interface; it does not, by itself, establish real-world routing or encrypted VPN throughput. The evidence available for the example below does not establish a measured throughput result.

List who needs VPN access and what they need to reach: individual remote workers, other offices, or both. Then check supported protocols, the number of users or tunnels the device can accommodate, and expected throughput with encryption enabled. Protocol support alone does not establish capacity or performance.

For network controls, verify that the router supports the VLANs and firewall policies needed to separate staff, guest, voice, and connected-device traffic. Check that the controls fit the intended design rather than relying on a feature name alone. DoS defense and filtering options may also matter to the business’s security policy.
Decide how Wi-Fi and management will work
Some business gateways are wired devices, not all-in-one Wi-Fi routers. If the gateway does not provide wireless coverage, include separate access points in the design and budget. Confirm access-point compatibility, hardware revision, and regional feature support before purchasing a bundle.

Choose a management approach that suits the people responsible for the network. Centralized management can help monitor and configure multiple devices, while local management may be sufficient for a small, simple setup. Check whether management depends on a controller, cloud service, subscription, or other infrastructure, and review the manufacturer’s update and support information.
One documented example: TP-Link Omada ER7206 V2
TP-Link’s US product page describes the Omada ER7206 V2 as a wired gigabit VPN router that integrates with Omada SDN for centralized cloud management and monitoring. Its listed ports are one gigabit SFP WAN/LAN port, one gigabit RJ45 WAN port, and four gigabit RJ45 WAN/LAN ports; TP-Link says it can support up to five WAN ports. The page lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, SSL, GRE, PPTP, and L2TP VPN variants, along with VLAN support, firewall policies, DoS defense, and IP/MAC/URL filtering.

This is a feature example, not a tested winner or a universal recommendation. The cited page presents the ER7206 V2 as a wired gateway, so a business that needs Wi-Fi should plan access points separately. The product page does not establish its real-world VPN throughput, suitability for a particular business, current price or availability, or the compatibility of a specific access point. Verify the model revision and regional specifications with TP-Link before buying.

A practical selection checklist
- Record your internet service speed and confirm the router’s WAN port speed.
- Decide whether you need multiple ISP links, failover, load balancing, or a single connection.
- Identify remote-access and site-to-site VPN needs; verify protocols, capacity, and encrypted throughput.
- Map the traffic that must be separated, then confirm VLAN and firewall controls support that design.
- Determine whether Wi-Fi is built in or requires separate access points, and verify compatibility.
- Choose local or centralized management and account for any controller, cloud, subscription, support, or installation costs.
- Confirm hardware revision, regional specifications, software support, price, and availability before purchase.
