Common uses include town halls, training, webinars, product launches, conferences, hybrid events, and recognition programs. A stream can make a message available to a wider audience, enable live questions, and leave a recording for later—but the results depend on planning, production, access, and follow-up.
What businesses use live streaming for
Employee communication, onboarding, and training
Leadership can use a town hall or all-hands stream to share announcements and updates with employees across locations. Recorded or scheduled streams can also support onboarding and training. Microsoft describes Teams town halls with managed Q&A, while IBM lists town halls, announcements, onboarding, and training among corporate uses.

Customer webinars, demonstrations, and launches
A company can present a product, demonstrate a service, announce a launch or sponsorship, and answer customer questions during a webinar or live Q&A. The format puts the presentation and audience interaction in one event; it does not guarantee that viewers will participate or become customers.

Streaming a conference session or product announcement can extend a B2B event to people who cannot attend in person. LinkedIn describes live video as an extension of B2B event campaigns. Start with the communication goal and story, then select the format and technology that support them.

- STREAM ANYWHERE — Go where the story takes you. Stream live from anywhere in the world using Wi-Fi, Ethernet or even your smartphone’s LTE network.
- INTELLIGENT APP CONTROL — Wirelessly control your Mevo and create compelling content with features like Auto-Director, all from your smartphone.
- MULTICAM MADE EASY — Connect up the three Mevo Start cameras to easily create broadcast-quality streams with multiple angles.
- ADVANCED ONBOARD AUDIO — Capture clean, clear audio using the built-in microphone or connect external audio sources for advanced setups.
Hybrid events and employee recognition
A stream can give remote attendees access to an in-person conference, company gathering, or awards and recognition event. Decide whether remote viewers are simply watching or should be able to contribute through questions or another moderated channel.
Reusable knowledge and follow-up content
A recording can help employees revisit training or let customers watch a session after it ends. Organizations may also turn an event into shorter clips or other follow-up material. If long-term access matters, compare how platforms handle recording, captions, search, permissions, and delivery to viewers.

What live streaming can—and cannot—deliver
- Wider access: People in different locations can attend without traveling to the venue. Reach still depends on access, promotion, compatible devices, and the audience’s willingness to join.
- Live interaction: Questions and feedback can surface during the event. Moderation and a format suited to the audience are important; latency can make exchanges feel less immediate.
- Continued use: A recording can serve people who missed the event and support training or repurposing. That value depends on a clear recording, appropriate access, and a plan for storing and sharing it.
- Potential cost efficiency: Streaming may cost less than some traditional broadcast approaches, but it is not automatically cheaper. Production labor, platform fees, connectivity, and event scale all affect the total.
For context, IBM cites Statista’s February 24, 2025 publication for an estimate that nearly 30% of internet users worldwide watched some form of live-streaming content weekly in Q3 2024. This is general audience context, not a measure of business-stream adoption.

LinkedIn reports that LinkedIn Live videos averaged seven times more reactions and 24 times more comments than native videos from the same broadcasters; its footnote says 2025 internal watch data counted views of at least 30 seconds. LinkedIn also reports 131% higher click-through rates, 19% higher post-event engagement, and 1.5 times the likelihood of future company marketing engagement for B2B organizations pairing LinkedIn Live with paid promotion. Those results came from LinkedIn internal data for select pilot testers measured from May 1, 2023, to June 18, 2024. How to plan a business livestream
- Set the communication goal. Decide what viewers should know or do afterward. Plan the story and message before choosing equipment or a platform.
- Define the audience and access. Identify whether the event is for employees, invited customers, partners, or the public. Consider expected scale, device access, registration or permissions, and whether the content is appropriate for the intended audience.
- Choose the interaction model. Decide whether this is primarily one-way viewing or a discussion. If viewers can submit questions, assign a moderator and determine how questions will be selected and answered.
- Match production to the event. A simple stream may need only a phone or laptop. Higher-control events may use dedicated camera inputs, streaming software, or a media mixer. An external USB webcam can be an optional upgrade if a built-in camera does not suit the setup; it is not a requirement.
- Plan connectivity and recovery. Check upload capacity and reliability at the venue, and prepare a fallback appropriate to the event’s importance. IBM says enterprises typically need at least 50 Mbps upload speed for the higher-quality multi-bitrate or 4K streaming use case it describes. Treat that as IBM guidance for that scenario, not a universal minimum for every stream. IBM also suggests redundant connections or cellular failover to improve reliability.
- Decide what happens after the event. Determine whether you need a recording, captions, searchable transcripts, analytics, or a managed archive, and who will make the recording available to the intended audience.
- Assign event roles and rehearse. For a managed event, identify who organizes, produces, presents, handles IT, and moderates. Test the full viewer path, audio, questions, recording, and fallback before the event.
Choose the format and platform around your needs
| Decision | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Audience and reach | Is the audience employees, invited customers, partners, or the public? How many people may attend, and what devices will they use? | Determines access requirements and whether the event should be open or restricted. |
| Interaction | Do viewers need two-way conversation, moderated Q&A, polls, or just a viewing link? | Sets expectations for the event format and the need for moderators or managed interaction. |
| Production | Will a phone or webcam suffice, or does the event need several camera sources, an encoder, or a media mixer? | Production complexity affects equipment, staffing, rehearsal, and reliability planning. |
| Access and governance | Does the content involve sensitive internal information? Are registration, permissions, or access limits needed? | Microsoft advises considering audience suitability, access limits, and security planning for broadcast services. |
| After-event use | Do you need a recording, captions, searchable transcripts, analytics, or an archive? | These capabilities determine whether the event remains useful after the live session. |
| Reliability and integration | Can the network support the event, what is the fallback, and does the platform fit tools already in use? | Helps reduce avoidable interruptions and operational friction. |
Microsoft’s current virtual-event guidance discusses Teams webinars and town halls. Microsoft Learn says Teams Live Events retired on June 30, 2026, and recommends moving to the unified Teams events experience; do not treat the retired feature as currently available. Microsoft’s legacy documentation describes production options ranging from a Teams webcam to an external hardware or software encoder, such as a media mixer. That distinction can help with production planning, but it is not a recommendation to adopt Teams Live Events.

Unreliable or insufficient upload connectivity
What happens: Viewers may see interruptions or degraded video. What to do: Test upload performance from the actual venue, match production quality to available capacity, and arrange a backup connection or cellular failover for events where continuity matters.

Questions go unanswered or interaction feels slow
What happens: Viewers may disengage when questions are not handled or replies arrive too late. What to do: Choose a format that fits the desired interaction, assign a moderator, explain how to submit questions, and account for latency when planning responses.
Viewers cannot access the event
What happens: Permissions, registration, or a mismatched audience setting can keep intended viewers out—or expose an event more widely than intended. What to do: Confirm audience access before sharing invitations, test the attendee journey, and review suitability and security for sensitive material.

The recording is not useful afterward
What happens: A recording may be difficult to find, follow, or share with the right people. What to do: Decide before the event where recordings will live, who may access them, and whether captions, transcripts, or shorter clips are needed.
The production is more complex than the event requires
What happens: Extra equipment and production steps add cost and failure points without necessarily improving the viewer’s experience. What to do: Begin with the simplest setup that meets the communication goal, then add cameras, an encoder, or a mixer only when the format or quality requirements justify them.
Or let it run in the cloud
