Researchers have used bumblebees to deliver bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria—to cherry blossoms. In experiments, the phages reached as many as 88% of flowers and significantly reduced populations of a bacterium linked to cherry canker. The results show experimental promise, not proven orchard-scale disease prevention.
What viruses did the researchers use?
They used bacteriophages, or phages: viruses that infect bacteria. They are not bee viruses, and they are not intended to infect plants or people. Individual phages can target particular bacteria, a specificity that makes them candidates for biological crop protection, according to the University of Warwick research account published through Phys.org on October 5, 2026.

This distinction matters because viruses found on flowers are not necessarily the same kind of virus or evidence of this treatment. A 2019 study, “Flowers as viral hot spots,” examined deformed wing virus and black queen cell virus; it detected them on flowers but did not observe bumblebees becoming infected under the study’s experimental conditions. Those bee-associated viruses are separate from the bacteria-targeting phages used in the cherry experiments.

How did the bees carry phages to the flowers?
The researchers formulated the phages as a powder and placed it in a tube at the hive exit. Bumblebees walking through the tube picked up the formulation on their bodies, then carried it to flowers as they foraged. The experiments used British buff-tailed bumblebees (Bombus terrestris audax) and included both artificial flowers and real cherry blossoms.

What happened in the experiments?
The target was Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, a bacterium associated with cherry canker. The study reported that phages reached up to 88% of flowers in its experimental system and that phage application significantly reduced populations of the target bacterium. The 88% figure is the highest flower-transfer result reported in those experiments; it is not a general delivery rate for orchards.
Is the treatment ready for cherry growers?
Not on the evidence described so far. The work demonstrates experimental delivery and a reduction in bacterial populations, but it does not establish that the approach prevents disease across commercial orchards. Long-term efficacy, performance at orchard scale, routine grower adoption and commercial availability remain unestablished.

Warwick research fellow Dr. Shannon Greer described the next stage as piloting the treatment with growers: “We have shown that the approach works experimentally, and the next step is to begin piloting the treatment with growers.” That makes the distinction clear: the reported results are a research-stage proof of concept, while practical use in orchards is a future step.
