Building Your Own Cloud: The Network and Remote Access to Self-Hosted Services

Compare self-hosted VPNs, provider tunnels, site-to-site links and router features for reaching your home server, and learn when you need port forwarding.

A self-hosted server needs two network paths. The first is the local one: your phone, laptop and TV reach it over the home LAN. The second is a controlled route from outside, and that is where most home-cloud projects get stuck. The question is rarely “which VPN?” It is where the endpoint runs, which private addresses it can reach, how each device is authorized, whether anything must accept inbound connections, and who operates the infrastructure. This guide walks through those decisions. It does not claim one design is best for everyone.

Two paths to the same server

On the LAN, the server and clients exchange IP traffic directly through your router or switch. Remote access adds a route from an outside device to either the whole private network or a specific service. Everything below is a different way of building that second route.

Before choosing a tool, write down four things:

  • The private subnet your server sits on (for example, the range your router hands out by DHCP).
  • Which services remote devices actually need: one web app, file sync, or the entire subnet.
  • Which devices will connect: your own phone and laptop, family members, or another site.
  • Whether your internet connection lets outside traffic reach your home at all. Some connections do not offer a reachable public address.

The WireGuard model: interfaces, keys and what it leaves out

The WireGuard project describes its job this way: “WireGuard securely encapsulates IP packets over UDP.” It creates a network interface, then associates tunnel IP addresses with public keys and remote endpoints. Each peer is identified by its key, and the addresses a peer may use are tied to that key. See the WireGuard overview.

The important boundary: WireGuard deliberately does not define key distribution or pushed configuration. Generating keys, getting them onto each device, assigning tunnel addresses, adding routes and writing firewall rules are your job, or the job of tooling you add on top. A tunnel gives you a route. It does not by itself decide who should reach what.

Access, back up, organize, and share data across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and compatible smart TVs—ideal for creators and advanced home users working across multiple devices.

In practice, a small WireGuard setup means:

  1. Pick a tunnel subnet separate from your LAN, so addresses never collide.
  2. Give the server and each client its own key pair and tunnel address.
  3. List each client as a peer on the server, and the server as a peer on each client.
  4. Decide whether clients send only home-bound traffic through the tunnel or everything.
  5. Add firewall rules on the server so a connected peer reaches only what you intend.

Four architectures compared

Approach Where the endpoint or control plane sits What to check
Self-hosted VPN A server, VM, container or supported router Public reachability, port forwarding where required, peer provisioning, routes, firewall policy, software updates
Provider-mediated tunnel A connector in your network makes an outbound connection to a provider Provider dependency, identity and access policy, which private ranges are represented, which traffic is routed
Site-to-site VPN Joins two private networks Non-overlapping address plan, static routes, endpoint reachability, whole subnets versus selected services
Router’s built-in remote access A compatible gateway or router Exact model and firmware support, device-sharing controls, firewall behavior, intended scope

These are patterns, not a security ranking. The right one depends on whether you need individual-device access, subnet-to-subnet connectivity, or access to one service.

Self-hosted VPN

You run the endpoint yourself, on Linux, a cloud instance, a VM or a container. OpenVPN’s Access Server, for example, is described as a self-hosted business VPN managed through a web administration interface, and its installation overview lists several deployment environments. Self-hosting means you also own patching, configuration and monitoring of that endpoint.

The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.

Provider-mediated tunnel

Cloudflare documents one such design: a cloudflared connector inside the private network establishes outbound connections and represents private address ranges, while the WARP client on a device can route selected traffic through Cloudflare’s edge to that tunnel (Cloudflare’s private-network article). Because the connection starts from inside, this style does not need you to open an inbound port in the same way. The trade-off is that part of the networking, and its control plane, depends on the provider. This is one vendor’s architecture, not a property of every tunnel.

Site-to-site VPN

This joins whole networks, such as your home and a relative’s house or a VPS network, rather than individual devices. OpenVPN’s site-to-site tutorial joins private networks through an encrypted tunnel and needs a reachable endpoint. Its listed prerequisites include port forwarding and a public IP address or DNS record. The two sides need different subnets, or routing becomes ambiguous.

Router built-in remote access

Some routers include a feature for this. MikroTik documents Back To Home and states it is meant for simple home-network access, not anonymity. Do not assume your router has it. Support varies by brand, model and firmware, so read your vendor’s documentation.

Do you need to open a port?

It depends on the architecture. A VPN endpoint inside your home that accepts connections from outside generally needs inbound reachability. In OpenVPN’s site-to-site example, that means port forwarding on the router and a public IP address or DNS record. As a generic example: you forward one UDP port on the router to the VPN host’s LAN address, and clients point at your public IP or a DNS name that follows it.

Check these before you start:

  • Does your router’s WAN address look public, or does your provider share addresses between customers? If it is shared, direct inbound forwarding will not work.
  • Does your public address change? A DNS record that tracks it avoids breakage.
  • Can you forward only the one VPN port, and nothing for individual apps?

If inbound reachability is impossible or unwanted, an outbound-initiated tunnel (the provider-mediated model), or a small endpoint on a cloud instance that your home server also connects out to, avoids opening your home router. Both add something else to operate or trust.

Keeping access narrow

  • Route only what is needed. Send just the server’s subnet or address through the tunnel, rather than everything, unless you want your phone’s traffic to exit through home.
  • One identity per device. Separate keys or credentials let you revoke a lost phone without touching others.
  • Firewall behind the tunnel. Being connected should not mean reaching every device on the LAN. Allow specific services.
  • Keep the endpoint updated. It is the one part of your cloud exposed to the outside, or the part tied to your provider account.

Choosing: a decision checklist

  1. Just my own devices reaching a few services? A WireGuard endpoint on the server or a supported router, or a provider-mediated tunnel, fits.
  2. Two locations that should see each other? Use site-to-site and plan non-overlapping subnets first.
  3. Cannot get inbound reachability? Look at outbound-initiated tunnels or a cloud-hosted relay endpoint.
  4. Want the least software to run? Check whether your router has a built-in feature, and confirm model and firmware support in vendor documentation.
  5. Don’t want to rely on a third party? Self-host the endpoint, and accept the maintenance and provisioning work.

If you are buying a router for this, look for documented VPN support, ongoing firmware updates, routing and firewall controls, and confirm your internet connection can be reached from outside. Compatibility differs by brand, so verify a specific model rather than relying on a feature list.
